Sonogram (Overview)

An ultraound, also known as a sonogram, is a painless and relatively inexpensive imaging test that utilizes sound waves instead of ionizing radiation. There are no side effects. Ultrasound can give us two-dimensional, and in some applications three-dimensional, images of structures and organs in virtually any part of the body. In addition to diagnostic uses, such as evaluating abnormalities in the abdomen, pelvis, and breast, ultrasounds are commonly used to guide needle and catheter placement in a variety of surgical and minimally invasive procedures.

A Good Idea: A 2 month OB sonogram is a good time to nail down the dates, confirm the number of fetuses, and confirm fetal life. Essential? Possibly not. If you are willing to sacrifice dating accuracy you could wait awhile. Some people like to play the odds. I like sure things. ...Read more

AKA Ultrasound: The sonogram is a test that looks at body organs with no radiation. It uses sound waves and can give us a 2 dimensional view of organs such as the kidney, liver, heart, and lungs. It can define spaces that are either solid or full of fluid. I can also guide large needles into an organ or near the spine, and can help define the area being cut open. Went to a sonogram my first sonogram I was told baby was due may 7 now they're telling me baby might be due April 21 because of her growth. Which one?

Need ob reevaluation: If first sonogram was performed by a skilled certified sonographer during your first trimester it is a most reliable way to confirm your gestational age/estimate your due date, which should not be changed. Although later sonograms after 28 weeks are less accurate, if there is some concern about "her growth", seek an obstetrical consultation from a Materno--Fetal-Medicine doctor(a MFM specialist). ...Read more
