Radiology/neurology. Ct scan shows bone, MRI shows soft tissue, so therefore can't indentify disease of skull bones. Intercrainial means misdiagnosis?

Both are complex: CT and MRI can identify bones and soft tissues of the skull and anatomy of the brain but in different types of detail. Intracranial means inside the skull. ...Read more

Can a radionuclide bone scan miss degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis and osteopenia?

Can a radionuclide bone scan miss degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis and osteopenia?

Yes: The bone scan shows areas of active bone deposition as "hot". Osteopenia won't be diagnosed as this denotes loss of bone density. Degenerative disc disease and osteoarthritis may not be demonstrated if they are insufficient to cause a bone response (healing or what is medically called an osteoblastic response). ...Read more

Radionucline bone scan process and use?

Radionucline bone scan process and use?

Bone abnormalities: Bone scan involves intravenous injection of radio tracer usually technetium 99m mdp which accumulates in skeleton. Scan may involve early phase(5-10 min) and late phase(2-3 hr) imaging. Increased uptake is seen in fractures, tumors, infection, etc. Decreased activity is seen in metal artifacts, aggressive tumor/infection, & loss of blood supply to bones. Bone scan very sensitive but not specific. ...Read more

Do x rays show herniated disk

Do x rays show herniated disk

No: X-ray will reveal the space between the vertebral bodies where the disc is found but unless the disc is calcified, it will not be visualized as x-ray energy will pass through this soft tissue structure while it does not penetrate the bone but you can get idea of how degenerative the disc may be by seeing how narrowed the disc space is or amount of bone spurs seen around it. Ct & MRI reveal disc. ...Read more

Would a chest ct show bone cancer in ribs?

Would a chest ct show bone cancer in ribs?

It would if: there is enough bone destruction or reactive changes. If the cancer/metastasis is small or has not yet caused much rib destruction or sclerosis, it may be difficult to see on a routine chest CT. ...Read more

Had 2 chest x rays front/side views.Had 1 CT abdomin, 1 X-ray of neck front/side, 1x ray of my spine for scoliosis front/side, worried radiation exspose?

Read more about it: To learn more about medical imaging and radiation risk, please check out: http://www.Conciergeradiologist.Com/ct-scan-radiation.Html and http://www.Conciergeradiologist.Com/radiation-exposure.Html. Properly indicated imaging studies represent, by definition, situations where the risks of radiation exposure are outweighed by the benefits to the patient. ...Read more

Can a x ray show spinal cancer?

Can a x ray show spinal cancer?

Yes and no: The X-ray will show a mass on the bony spine , at times haze on the soft tissue on the spine and lesions eroding the spine. Al of these masses that can be seen on X-rays can be benign or malignant. Thus the X-ray will show the mass but can not prove it is cancer without a biopsy ...Read more

Knee mri showed torn meniscus and bone spurs. Now dr wants bone scan.is that scan needed after mri. What would bone scan show that isn't on mri??

Generally,: finding a meniscal tear and bone spurs on a knee MRI doesn't require a bone scan for further evaluation. There must be something else they are concerned about, but it is difficult to speculate with limited information. Talk to your doctor about why the bone scan is needed. ...Read more

Normal back/ neck xray rule out spinal injury? Chest CT rule out spinal injury?

Normal back/ neck xray rule out spinal injury? Chest CT rule out spinal injury?

No: Plain x-Ray of the neck rules out a fracture, and dislocation, but not spinal injury; CT of the chest does not have the resolution to visualize the spine, only the bone. MRI imaging is better suited to visualize spinal injury. Best to see a neurologist and have a comprehensive neurological examination. ...Read more

Mri shows three lobulations in bone above knee. Bone scan says everything ok. How could mri and bone scan show two different results?

Mri shows three lobulations in bone above knee. Bone scan says everything ok. How could mri and bone scan show two different results?

Different studies: The meaning of "lobulations" in the bone on an MRI study is uncertain. This may mean an osteophyte, cortical thickening, old trauma, a normal variant, or something else. The bone scan measures bone chemistry and activity such as repair of the bone. When the bone scan is normal with these findings on MRI, it means normal bone chemistry, and indicates a none serious problem. ...Read more

Does X-ray detect bone metastases?

Does X-ray detect bone metastases?

Not great: X-RAYs are relatively insensitive in the detection of early or small metastatic lesions. Although CT scans are superior, CT scanning is relatively insensitive in showing small lesions, and it has the disadvantage of limited skeletal coverage. Bone scans are very sensitive (they'll pick up everything) but nonspecific (could be just arthritis). MRI and PET scanning are accurate but very expensive. ...Read more
