Why are misdiagnoses so common for psychiatry?

Why are misdiagnoses so common for psychiatry?

B/c of subjectivity: Misdiagnosis is more common in psychiatry b/c of it's subjective nature. Absence of physical signs, less help from lab work, imaging studies & physical exam. Although, psychiatric diagnoses may be almost as accurate, if a good history is taken, applying dsmiv-tr criteria, ruling out all other possible causes, excellent observation, doing relevant labs, imaging studies & checking 6 major groups. ...Read more

Does psychiatry basically ignore the behavioural symptoms?

Does psychiatry basically ignore the behavioural symptoms?

My goodness!: I'm not sure where an idea like this about psychiatry would come from. Behavior is one of the areas in which psychiatric symptoms and disorders express -- so how could we possibly ignore it? Behavior produces objectively observable data. To correctly understand behavior requires information from the patient: thoughts & emotions, both conscious and unconscious. Truly biopsychosocial. ...Read more

Why some people think psychiatry isn't real branch of medicine?

Why some people think psychiatry isn't real branch of medicine?

Defensiveness: I agree with dr. Omrani about ignorance being a big reason. Some people have remarkable abilities in this area. Another is defensiveness, because they are frightened of "those" people with psychiatric problems. It's easier to dismiss an issue than to delve into and understand it. People often do dismiss psychiatry -- until they or their family members need help. Then, the light may dawn. ...Read more

Can an accurate psychiatry diagnosis come from a 15min session?

Quick diagnosis: Personally, I find it very difficult to diagnose in psychiatry in only 15 minutes unless I have a lot of background information (old records, information provided by family etc) or unless it is an extremely obvious situation (very blatant, severe symptoms). Part of the diagnosis is ruling out things as well, and it would be very hard to ask all the appropriate questions in a short period of time. ...Read more

Normal: Talking to a psychiatrist can be anxiety-provoking, but remind yourself that s/he is there to help you. By talking with her/him you may begin to find that you're able to handle other anxiety-provoking situations more easily. Good luck! ...Read more

Philosophically...: The "ideal" in medical treatment is to achieve a healthy norm. This is very difficult to achieve, but should always be the goal.

In psychiatry this means helping patients (as much as possible) develop the ability to realistically experience and navigate the world, enabling them to adapt to stressors while they experience life's joys, losses, and disappointments with a healthy range of emotions. ...Read more
