Are there true benefits from taking probiotics? When and why are they recommended? Exactly what do they do?

Most say yes: There is a lot of evidence connecting probiotics to the health of your body and even the health of your mind. You can find several new articles about this almost daily. The probiotics change the bacteria of your colon and digestive system and this has numerous repercussions for your immune system as well as your bloodstream that handles improved metabolites that result from the changes. ...Read more

My father got cdiff while in the hosp, why don't drs prescribe probiotics more frequent to increase the good flora when on strong antibiotics?

My father got cdiff while in the hosp, why don't drs prescribe probiotics more frequent to increase the good flora when on strong antibiotics?

Unproven: While some studies show possible benefit from probiotics more studies show an inconclusive benefit. It appears that active antibiotic use destroys the helpful bacteria in probiotics making them useless. In rare cases, probiotics have become unfriendly and caused unusual infections in people with weak immune systems. Probiotics may have a more useful role after antibiotic are stopped. ...Read more

I was prescribed a course of doxycycline & am just curious - should I try to include some probiotics in my diet?

Yes if okay with M.D: Probiotics can help to counter the GI side effects of most antibiotics. Probiotics can be taken as individual tablets or as contained in drinks and yogurt. The studies in this area have shown some promising results, but more studies are needed. Your physician can further advise you. I hope that this helps. If you have an underlying immunodeficiency, please check with your doctor. ...Read more

Is the use of probiotics daily healthy?

Is the use of probiotics daily healthy?

Should be OK: These contain the "good organisms" living symbiotically with you. Certain condition such as use of antibiotics often kill-off too many of these good bugs and leave us more susceptible to illness from other bad bugs. Probiotics basically replace some of the loss of the good bug and hopefully restore the balance. Need for every day? Maybe not, but can use it, especially yummy yogurts. Good luck. ...Read more

My dr has me on cephalexin 500 mg 3x daily for a month for bacterial prostatis. Can u recommend a cost effective probiotic to avoid diareah?

See below: Any probiotic capsules that have over 30 million cfu per capsule should decrease the incidence of antibiotic associated diarrhea and c. Difficile colitis. I recommend vsl#3 which has over 100 million cfu of probiotic bacteria per capsule. Do probiotics work if you don't take them daily? Could you take them mon, wed, fri, and still have them work?

Yes: They can help if taken every other day as you suggested. The dose of probiotics and the frequency of taking them as well as the individual bacteria that are in the probiotics will help determine how well they work. You didn't mention what you are taking them for. That also is important, since you need to take the right probiotic for the right reason. ...Read more

Diarrhea after 4 weeks of augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate). Went about 7 times today. Already on many strong probiotics. Will Imodium help? What to do?

Antibiotic diarrhea: This seems like a VERY long time to be on Augmentin-& now you have side-effects from that. I would want to get this checked TODAY to see if this is C. diff (Clostridium difficile) -a dangerous complication from too much antibiotics. I would NOT use imodium (loperamide) until u know the diagnosis, because that could make the problem worse. Hope u can see a doc today. Drink fluids/chicken soup to replace losses. ...Read more

I'm on my third day of taking VSL 3 probiotic and have horrible diarrhea. Is this a common side effect?

Probiotic troubles: I wonder whether the diarrhea might have come from some antibiotics that were given recently or this product? Sometimes there can be abdominal discomfort or even diarrhea with these products - depending on your tolerances. You should probably stop taking them and call your GI doctor for help. In the mean time, taking in some fluids/chicken soup will help with the volume losses. Hope u feel better. ...Read more

How do probiotics work for ulcerative colitis? Since it is an autoimmune disease wouldn't the overactive immune system fight the probiotics?

How do probiotics work for ulcerative colitis? Since it is an autoimmune disease wouldn't the overactive immune system fight the probiotics?

The Microbiome...: Great thought question. However, it isn't all about the immune system - we recently are beginning to understand the role of the community of micro- organisms in the gut (the microbiome).
By altering the natural composition and exposure to certain foods early in life, our immune system over-reacts to certain proteins and microbes that would otherwise be harmless. ...Read more

Doctors can you tell me when should I take pre-probiotic combination?

Good idea: A "pre"biotic feeds the bacteria in the "pro"biotic, so these colonies grow and fluorish. Prebiotics consist of carbohydrate that is indigestible by humans, but which their gut bacteria love. It can help normalize the blend of bacteria in your gut. Http://www. Ncbi. Nlm. Nih. My 4 month old is constipated as of tuesday. She gets probiotic daily and juice/water mix but still no bm. How can I help her go? She seems in pain

Regular Feed???: Constipation is best defined as a thickened or dry stool produced when the large intestine extracts too much water. Breast fed babies can have poo every feed or only 1/wk. If it is soft, it is normal. Solids like cereal or applesauce are natural constipators & I don't advise their use at this young age. Full strength apple juice or prune juice @ 1 oz once or twice daily will often loosen stools. ...Read more

What do ProBiotics do?

Restore gut flora: We have trillions of bacteria in our intestines, most of which are friendly & support digestion, improve immune function, affect weight, influence gene expression etc.
Antibiotics can kill many friendly bacteria, creating a serious long-term disruption of our flora. Probioitcs can help restore the balance friendly microbes in our GI tract.

Do probiotics really help?

Do probiotics really help?

Help with what?: Probiotics MAY help. They are usually still alive, if stored properly all the time from production, through shipping, to being on the store shelf. The living microorganisms get weaker and die over time. The problem is that nobody can really tell how much live material was in the package to start, how much is alive when one buys it, how much survives at home, nor how much goes to one's intestine. ...Read more
