Doctor insights on:
Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that concerns children and their health.
Good question: I don't see a way to file a complaint with abp. However, if you really feel that your pediatrician has done something wrong, please start a conversation with him/her. Pediatricians are extremely interested in helping your child and can even suggest second opinions. The abp maintains specialty certification, the worst they could do was revoke certificaiton, but not a medical license to practice. ...Read more

Why does the american academy of pediatrics say not to exceed a maximum of 32oz of formula in 24hrs?
Yes: Almost everything in the pediatric office carries germs, including books, toys and even the doctor's stethoscope. Most offices try to clean these items but it would be very difficult to clean everything between each patient. Hand washing is a good idea when you leave using soap and water or hand sanitizer which should be available in each room. ...Read more

Pediatrics only. Feel rushing fluids and gurgling in 6wk babe. I hv very fast milk she drinks 90 gulps in 90 seconds and full. Causing peristalsis?
Normal:-): 6 week olds have very loud gurgly tummies. I call them "volcano belly". This is normal and is not related to the speed of your milk flow, though yours does sound fast. Persistalsis is the term for the normal movement of the intestines. So yes, the milk is causing peristalsis because it is supposed to. If your baby is gaining weight easily, relax mama and enjoy your 90 second speed feedings. ...Read more

Infant circumcision benefits outweigh the risks according to the american academy of pediatrics (aap). What are other opinions?
Infant Circumcision: Recent research found that there was not enough evidence that circumcision definitely prevented UTI and STD and hence currently circumcision is considered to be more for religious or family preferences. The coverage for the procedure by the insurances has also undergone a slight change recently. But many still are strong in the belief that there is a definite benefit from circumcision ...Read more

If you had to choose all over, would you once again choose pediatrics as your specialty and be a primary care physician?
I would: I would because I have this great love of children and being able to help them. But it is different for every individual - it depends what you are in medicine for. If you want to get rich and not have much on call duty, primary care and pediatrics are not for you. But if your reward is hearing that first cry at birth, or a tiny little hug and smile, then pediatrics is your calling! ...Read more
What kind of doctor should I become? I'm interested in pediatrics, the ER, and paramedics. Can I have some background on each of those?
Depends: Well it really depends on whether you want to be a doctor (pediatrics and Emergency Medicine) or a health professional (paramedic). As a physician/doctor you will have to complete college (4years) and med school (4years) and then residency after that (where you would specialize in either pediatrics or emergency medicine, etc). For paramedic there is MUCH less school/training required. ...Read more
In your opinion, which specialty has the smartest docs? The nicest? The least nice? My vote: smartest = pathology; nicest = pediatrics; least nice = it's a tie: endocrinology and vascular surgery.
Value judgments: Being human, physicians have varying personalities ("niceness") and all have intelligence or they wouldn't be in medicine. People have value judgments, though. For instance, many physicians told me I was "too smart" to go into psychiatry. Should we make similar judgments about 43 year old men from athens ga -- saying they're not as nice or as smart as women from atlanta? I think not. :-). ...Read more
