Hi, I've had my Skyla IUD for 2 years now, and every so often I experience strange pelvic pain. It used to be after I had a lot of sex, but now I'm now I'm not, and each time I've had it checked (twice), the doctor says they can see/feel the strings?

OK: As long as your pain in infrequent, minor, does not stop you from functioning, transient, with no other symptoms, just monitor the situation, you still have about a year with Skyla. Though Skyla may be causing the pelvic pain, it is not necessarily so. ...Read more

Depo provera (medroxyprogesterone): If you've received regular injections for three years and never missed one then the likelihood of your being pregnant is extremely low. Endometriosis: Women who have a hysterectomy secondary to pelvic pain due to endometriosis, can still have pelvic pain after hysterectomy. I'm not sure why your ovaries would have been removed at age 27, unless you had cancer? I would definitely see your gynecologist as it sounds as if you have no female pelvic organs left to have pain from. Possible that it's musculoskeletal or gastrointestinal as well. ...Read more

Cou;ld be spasm, irritable bowel but could be other stuff, like gyn issues, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulosis, diverticulitis, hernia, adhesions from prior surgery or inflammatory diseases.
Gyn exam, labs, imaging studies, e.g. Abdominal/pelvic sono, maybe ct, colonoscopy may be of use.

Tough case: Chronic pelvic pain is one of the more difficult diagnoses to pin down. If it is cyclical (worse with periods) then consider endometriosis as a likely possibility. You might need a laparoscopy to make the diagnosis, as ultrasound is often not helpful. Other possibilities are urinary tract, bowel, or musculoskeletal related pain.
