I have not seen it: True allergic reactions to sudafed are rare. More commonly people will not tolerate the drug effects of the medication. This can include heart racing, elevated blood pressure, sleeplessness, feeling jittery. This medication can case problems with an enlarged prostate and certain kinds of glaucoma. In the first trimester of pregnancy, it is associated with an increased incidence of a birth defect. ...Read more

Nasacort (triamcinolone) or flonaise, what is better for treating nasal allergies?

Nasacort (triamcinolone) or flonaise, what is better for treating nasal allergies?

Roughly Equal: Either of these sprays are fine for allergies. They both work the same way. Nasacort (triamcinolone) is available over the counter which means you do not need a prescription. It is also scent and alcohol free so it is easier on the nose. Flonase is very effective, but does contain alcohol and some scent which does irritate some noses. ...Read more

Nasal steroid sprays for rhinitis/thick PND, give me perioral dermatitis. Tried antihistamines, montelukast, ipratropium, PPIs as alternative. Ideas?

Saline: Irrigate 2-3 times daily with saline (via neti-pot or squeeze bottle). This is step one. Otherwise, physical exam and history are needed to determine rhinitis subtype (allergic, vasomotor, infectious, etc.). Good luck! ...Read more

Which is better for nasal allergies: nasacort (triamcinolone) or flonase?

Which is better for nasal allergies: nasacort (triamcinolone) or flonase?

Equal: When it comes to nasal steroid sprays they are all effective and it typically becomes a "patient preference." Flonase smells like flowers and requires a doctors prescription (until spring 2015 when it goes over the counter). Nasacort (triamcinolone) is tasteless and odorless and has been available without a prescription since spring 2014. ...Read more

Bad cedar allergies, tried claritin (loratadine)?

Bad cedar allergies, tried claritin (loratadine)?

Cedar: Cedar is a late fall, winter and early spring problem in many states. If meds are ineffective orally, i would try a mix of intranasal anithistamines and steroids. Oral or injectables should be saved for emergencies. Remember allergy is genetic and only immunotherapy can rebuild your system. I found that allergy shots help my patients. ...Read more

Is drixine nasal spray similar to nasonex (mometasone)?

Is drixine nasal spray similar to nasonex (mometasone)?

Very different: Nasonex (mometasone) is a prescription nasal steroid spray to effectively treat nasal allergies in patients over 2 years old. It is the most effective treatment for nasal allergies and used on a regular basis. Drixine is available over the counter oxymetazoline, a nasal decongestant which works quickly but designed for short term use (less than 4-6 days) due to risk of rebound nasal congestion. ...Read more

Zyrtec, claritin, (loratadine) allegra, clarinex. Other allergy pill options? Year-round, persistant allergies. Wet in ears, post-nasal drip (sore throat).

Zyrtec, claritin, (loratadine) allegra, clarinex. Other allergy pill options? Year-round, persistant allergies. Wet in ears, post-nasal drip (sore throat).

Before you go : Looking for another allergy medication, i would keep the one that works best for you and take it diligently everyday with a steroid nasal spray twice daily for a month to see a big difference with just burst of meds here and there and only when you feel like it. If you have already done this, then it is time to see your doctor, possibly referral to allergist or ENT depends on what the problem is. ...Read more

What's the best allergy medicine? Allegra, Claritin (loratadine) or Zyrtec?

What's the best allergy medicine? Allegra, Claritin (loratadine) or Zyrtec?

Same effects: These three medications do the same thing and are not supposed to make you drowsy, however, Zyrtec seems to work somewhat better than Allegra and Claritin. I would say Claritin is the least effective out of these three medications. ...Read more

Novocaine allergies=> cocaine allergies?

Novocaine allergies=> cocaine allergies?

Possibly: Both local anesthetics are esters, which means they are in the same family. However, true allergy is rare. Most commonly it is a side effect of Epinephrine added or a preservative. Lidocaine, Marcaine and other amide local anesthetics shouldn't cross-react. Cocaine has its own side-effects that are very dangerous so stay away, allergic or not. ...Read more

Which is better for seasonal allergies: nasal steroid sprays like Dymestra or steroid injections?

Which is better for seasonal allergies: nasal steroid sprays like Dymestra or steroid injections?

Allergy nasal sprays: Steroid injections are not appropriate treatments for seasonal allergies. Usually, a combination of antihistamines and nasal sprays can be helpful. Steroid nasal sprays reduce inflammation inside the nose in order to allow improved breathing. They must be used daily and they take about 1 week to achieve peak efficacy. ...Read more

If i've conjunctivitis allergy, can it heal by allergy injection therapy ?Tried allergy meds : allegysal, patanol (olopatadine) and avil, Claritin loratadine, please help

Yes: Treatment of allergic conjunctivitis starts with eliminating or avoiding the allergen as well as rinsing the allergen from your eyes with plain water (reduces the allergen load). Allergy shots can help as can oral allergy meds. There are eye drops that help a great deal also. Steroid eye drops are very effective but are not used long term due to risk of glaucoma and cataract. ...Read more

Nasonex, (mometasone) nasacort aq or flonase, which quicker for nasal congestion/ seasonal allergies? I also nasal colloidal silve-nott o2 binding, will that work

Nasal sprays: All nasal steroids take a few days to start working and need to build up a dose before they become fully effective. Nasal antihistamines are quicker in onset of actiion. A combination nasal spray should help your symptoms for fast and long lasting relief. Now i don't know anything about the coooloidal silver spray you mentioned. ...Read more

Can montelukast become an alternative of allergens immunotherapy for perenial allergic rhinitis ?

Can montelukast become an alternative of allergens immunotherapy for perenial allergic rhinitis ?

Not really: I suggest 3 steps to controlling allergies : 1) avoid the things you are allergic to. 2) take medications to control the symptoms. 3) get 'allergy shots' (immunotherapy) to teach your body to not be "allergic" to those things (immune tolerance). Using a leukotriene antagonist control the symptoms some, but it is not the most effective medication, and is not an equal alternative to immunotherapy. ...Read more
