In the psychiatric hospital, I was given a "therputic Multivitamin" daily. Do I need to take one? What to look for? (Take prescribed folic acid)

Multivitamin: A "therapeutic multivitamin" given in the hospital setting is typically very similar to a quality general multivitamin that you can buy in the store, such as the Centrum brand. Whether you need to take one or not depends on your condition. Folic acid (B9), thiamine (vitamin B1) and vitamin D3 are commonly prescribed separately depending on condition. Your primary MD is the best person to ask. ...Read more

Safe and wise: It's not only safe but wise. According to the ama "it appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements; suboptimal levels of vitamins, even well above those causing deficiency syndromes, are risk factors for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and osteoporosis." (http://bit. Ly/14tmfiq) the recent studies claiming vits don't work used low amounts of poor-quality vits. ...Read more

Can a body get used to unnatural multivitamins and be inable to obtain the natural vitamins from food? How frequently does that happen?

Can a body get used to unnatural multivitamins and be inable to obtain the natural vitamins from food? How frequently does that happen?

It doesn't: Food, supplements and vitamins are broken down into their components in the normal process of digestion. These small molecules are then absorbed and find their way to where they are needed in the body. The components of multivitamins, when broken down, are not unnatural and the body makes no distinction about the source. ...Read more

Do multivitamins work? What if I am only 19 years old?

Even it you get the recommended amounts there is strong evidence of benefits of amounts far higher. Thus, vitamins may both help you to feel better ; prevent chronic illnesses, but eat a healthy diet as well. See http://bit. Ly/18xyule. ...Read more

Any negative side effects from multivitamins like being ravenous?

Any negative side effects from multivitamins like being ravenous?

Some side effects: I have not heard of being ravenous as a side effect, but side effects may occur. The most common might be nausea, but this is more likely if taken on an empty stomach. It is also not unusual for people to be allergic to vitamins- many contain soy, corn, gluten or other allergenic substances and some also react to fillers and binders like magnesium stearate. Hypoallergenic vitamins are available. ...Read more
