Spotting common: Spotting and cramping with the Mirena IUD and others is very very common. Almost the rule rather than exception. The surveys show that some women stop spotting & cramping in a month or so, some 2-4 months out. Others don't stop spotting until a year out. Cross your fingers. Only option is to have it removed if it becomes unbearable. ...Read more

I have had the Mirena IUD for 6.5 months and I am still experiencing frequent spotting and cramping and longer periods (8-10) days. Remove or wait?

It is common to have: irregular bleeding in the first 3 months, sometimes heavy. However once the Mirena (levonorgestrel) has been assimilated periods become much lighter, often times disappearing altogether. This is a desirable side effect for most women. However, if your periods are getting heavier not lighter, it is time to revisit your GYN and ask about possibly switching you to another type of IUD or other. ...Read more

Mirena (levonorgestrel) is tricky!: Mirena (levonorgestrel) is used for contraception, and to control heavy menstrual bleeding (hmb). It's known to have 6 mos of irreg spotting, then may diminish menses to as little as nothing. When the Mirena (levonorgestrel) is done @ 5 yrs, menses revert to before. As is true of all IUD's, check for the strings to be certain they're still there. IUD's prevent implantation, not conception, maybe check ept. Good Luck ...Read more

3rd mirena iud installed 2.16.17 after this procedure I've had a brownish discharge and cramping only when standing&bending.small hole poppedin uterus?

Unlikely: This is likely normal. However, make sure to follow up with the physician who placed the IUD in a few weeks to ensure the IUD strings are still visualized as sometimes IUD can fallout. Rarely the uterus can be perforated during placement of the IUD but that can also be ruled out if the IUD strings are visualized during pelvic exam. ...Read more

Year 4 w/mirena iud, no period with it. Now slight spotting, cramps, moody, irritable, very emotional. Could i be pregnant?

Probably not: The number one side effect of Mirena (levonorgestrel) is irregular and unpredictable bleeding. For some women it starts right after the device is placed in the uterus. For others it starts weeks, months, or years later. It would be wise to see your doctor for an exam and possibly an ultrasound to evaluate for other problems or causes. Mirena (levonorgestrel) is associated with a decrease in the mood (depression), see your doctor. ...Read more

Should i go to the doctors for a blood test for pregnancy? I have had my mirena IUD for almost a year and a half. I haven't had my period since 2 months after my insertion. Recently I have been getting heavy cramping(no blood) and extreme pregnancy sympto

An : An iud by itself gives you a less than 1% of getting pregnant - it's 99% effective. If you are concerned about pregnancy, you can either take a home pregnancy test or go to your doctor for one just to put your mind at ease. The symptoms of pregnancy can be very vague and are easily attributed to other illnesses. If you have not been feeling well, it might be worth visiting your doctor for an exam. Good luck! ...Read more

I have Mirena IUD I've had it in for almost 4 years and the last week I have been feeling a flutter type feeling under my right rib wasn't sure what i?

Unclear question: IUD and your symptoms are probably not related. You may watch and wait. If the symptoms persist for more than three weeks, it would be prudent to see a doctor.
Wish you good health! - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. I am getting a mirena IUD next week. Should i ask for xanax (alprazolam)? And how much ibuprofin should I take beforehand? I've never had kids and I am 20.

Not necessarily: Unless you have an established anxiety disorder, you shouldn't need xanax (alprazolam). The insertion of the iud is quick; most women will feel a quick pinch when it is implanted. Some will have irritation of their cervix which can cause cramping. I would wait until after the procedure to see whether you need ibuprofen. ...Read more

Pregnancy with IUD: Sounds like you both are not on the same page. I recommend that you see a marriage counselor to resolve this because no matter what happens one of you will resent the other (more). Pregnancy can happen after 5 years but sometimes the presence of the IUD, no matter how old, can prevent pregnancy. If she were to conceive, IUD removal can cause a miscarriage. ...Read more

I have had a Mirena IUD for over two years now with minimal issues. Lately however; I have an unbearable vaginal odour, could it be caused by the IUD?

Caused=no: The environment of your vagina/cervix/womb is moist & sheds protein & sugar bearing mucous. This is prime food for a variety of germs that feed off them. The odor likely reflects the overgrowth of some odor producing germs which may or may not trigger other symptoms. It is sometimes harder to clear these infections when you have a foreign body (IUD) in place. Time for a visit for proper dx & rx. ...Read more

Can the mirena iud make you gain weight in the tummy area please.

Not typical: Mirena is a small plastic device placed inside that uterus. It secretes a small amount of Progesterone that basically acts locally on the uterine lining. Systemic side effects such as weight gain are not usually associated with this method. Weight gain is very common for most men and women usually related to caloric intake and exercise. ...Read more

I have a Mirena IUD; no periods- how do I know when I'm in Menapause?

Mirena IUD/menopause: The average age for "true" menopause is 54 among US women, which is when estrogen is no longer made by the ovaries. The marker for this is the level of "follicle stimulating hormone" (FSH) which is commonly at 90-100 or more (the premenopausal levels are from 2-10). Mirena has progesterone which can negate ovulation, so ask your gyn provider to measure your FSH for certainty. ...Read more

What would cause a heavy period like flow after removal of Mirena IUD? Was under the understanding that it kept lining thin.

Age 60 & heavy flow: If indeed you are 60 years of age. removing the Mirena IUD was sorely needed. Moreover, heavy bleeding post Mirena at any age raises the question of abnormal endometrial proliferation. It would be a good idea for your GYN MD to take an endometrial sampling (biopsy) to rule out endometrial hyperplasia which can lead to endometrial/uterine cancer. ...Read more

Hey there! I see you're a gynecologist, so I'd expect you might have some knowledge about the Mirena IUD. Is it ok to cum inside my SO? She has one.

With her permission: Yes, you can if she is conducive to your desire as well. Thank goodness that she has taken contraceptive strides with the Mirena iUD to eliminate inadvertent conception. There are rare reported instances whereby the IUD string is left too long and tampons or other intra vaginal inserted items (you) get wrapped around the string and inadvertently "pull out" the IUD on withdrawal. Again, it's rare. ...Read more
