How long will it take for miralax (polyethylene glycol) to work usually?

Hours to days.: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) works by absorbing water from the colon allowing it to move easier through the bowel and pass the stool. It probably needs to be taken daily to be effective. It is not like milk of magnesia or citrate of mnagnesia, which should only take few hours to be effective. ...Read more

Is it safe to use miralax (polyethylene glycol) for a 3 year old?

Is it safe to use miralax (polyethylene glycol) for a 3 year old?

Yes: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is probably the most commonly used medicine for constipation in pediatrics. Pediatricians and pediatric gastroenterologists use it for children even younger than your child. I would recommend discussing with your pediatrician the dosage, the length of expected treatment and when your doctor wishes to see your child back for a recheck. ...Read more

More Fiber...: Make sure you are eating 30-40 grams of fiber per day to optimize transit through your GI tract. If still constipated despite a healthy high fiber diet and active lifestyle, then start adding stool softners (e.g. Colace), daily or every other day dose of gentle laxative (e.g. Miralax). You should try and have a bm at least once every 3 days. Consider seeing a gastroenterologist. ...Read more

Osmotic laxative: If you remember from science class putting sugar or other dry compound in small amount of water and placing it in lager container of tap water the tap water would cross the plastic bag and dilute the sugar water......Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is an osmotic laxative it prevents water from being absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract thereby getting more water to the anus vice a dry poop. ...Read more

How long can miralax (polyethylene glycol) safely last in water before you drink it?

How long can miralax (polyethylene glycol) safely last in water before you drink it?

Taste vs safety: I don't believe polyethylene glycol (miralax) gets spoiled and so there is no time limit for it to be in water for use--it is in GoLytely for many months/years. The powder form probably won't taste as pleasant leaving in the water too long--as it is a osmotic agent and this sucks-in water and can thicken a bit over time. Enojy it while it is fresh :-) consult doc. Good luck. ...Read more

Let's define problem: Doctors define constipation as stools less frequently than once every 3-4 days. Patients feel they are "constipated" when passing hard or small volume stool, or they feel full & bloated. Are your symptoms acute or chronic? Blocked? Gut sluggish or is your rectum dysfunctional? Trauma, bleeding, pain, weight loss, history of colitis/infection? Don't keep self medicating--ask your doctor for help. ...Read more

What happens if you overdose on miralax (polyethylene glycol)?

What happens if you overdose on miralax (polyethylene glycol)?

= Colonoscopy prep: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is essentially a small dose of oral lavage widely prescribed for years in preparation for colonoscopy. The drug is not generally absorbed, so more taken means more of it available to promote bowel evacuation. An "overdose" of MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) approaches the dose that optimally cleanses the colon for colonoscopy as something called "MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) prep." don't "od" on your own--see doctor for right dose. ...Read more

I took too much miralax (polyethylene glycol) now I have been on the toilet for 6 hrs it started as a solid now is a grity water substance... what is wrong?

New diet and wait!: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is an osmotic laxative, which means it draws water into the gut to soften stool to aid in producing a bowel movement. Try a BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) to help reform stools and reduce diarrhea. Symptoms should begin to resolve with this. Consider adding OTC Imodium, this time according to the label directions:) Drink water to replace the fluids you have lost. Take Care ...Read more

Constipation: It may not be "cleared up". Chronic constipation leads to rectal vault distending. This in turn leads to encoresis or stool soiling. It necessitates weeks to months of regular bms to reverse the distention. Fiber and laxatives help. See a pediatric gastroenterologist. ...Read more

What the right dose of miralax for a 4 month old baby?

What the right dose of miralax for a 4 month old baby?

I recommend 2.5-5 ml: But this depends a little on the size of your baby. Preschool children easily tolerate 1 cap full, which is 17 grams (about a tablespoon or 15ml). If dose is not effective in 8-12 hours, a repeat dose may be given until stool is soft. Too large a dose will cause diarrhea and can potentially cause dehydration, so be sure to offer fluids. ...Read more

Dose-dependent drug: Doctors define constipation as stools less frequently than once every 3-4 days. Patients feel they are "constipated" when passing hard or small volume stool, or they feel full & bloated. We can't tell from your question if this is a one-time problem or a recurrent and progressive one. Also, we don't know if you're blocked, if your gut is sluggish, or your rectum works correctly.
