Why can't my general practitioner prescribe metformin or clomid (clomiphene)? I have pcos off pill since january no periods

Scope of Care.: Depends upon why they are prescribing the med. In general it is not wise for a gp to prescribe meds out of their area of expertise or practice. Using metformin to treat pcos sounds like a good gp fit, but using Clomid (clomiphene) may be a step too far. ...Read more

My wife was prescribed metformin to get pregnant. How long should she continue taking it after she is pregnant.?

My wife was prescribed metformin to get pregnant. How long should she continue taking it after she is pregnant.?

1st Trimester: Most physicians have women stop taking metformin sometime in the 1st trimester. Typically women on metformin also have some Insulin resistance, it's important to have a glucose tolerance test in the 1st trimester to check for gestational diabetes. I recommend women go off their metformin after getting pregnant, have the glucose test and then use more typical agents for glucose control if need. ...Read more

I'm taking metformin for type 2 diabeties an is at a steady 5.9 I do bodybuilding an an going to start steroids how do I do it safely?

You don't: If you don't have a testosterone hormone deficiency, and you take steroids, you may become more Insulin resistant. Additionally you may cause testicular shrinking as doping (when you take anabolic hormones when you don't physiologically need them) suppresses pituitary gonadotropins from normal feedback mechamism to keep testes healthy. For females other problems develop. ...Read more
