What should I do to help a malabsorption problem?

Depends on what: Milk can be malabsorbed if there is a lactose intolerance from insuffucient lactase to digest it (common). Gluten, if there is a gluten intolerance. Vitamin B12 if there are disorders like pernicious anemia, atrophic gastritis. Various products may not be absorbed properly after gastric bypass surgery, recurrent pancreatitis, bowel resection, some parasite infestation. The message: check it out.

What are the different foods that can cause malabsorption?

Wording issue: If you have an illness that injures the absorptive surface of your gut, all foods will not be as well absorbed. This can be transient, as a gut virus or long term, as an immune/allergy/intolerance to a number of ingested items. Red #40 is a food dye that causes problems for some, gluten in grains does for others, there are many more. Individual testing can identify specifics when needed.

If you have malabsorption at what rate would weight be lost?

Unpredictable: Malabsorption can be mild or severe. Weight may not change if enough calories are absorbed or one could loose a pound a day or more if the malabsorption is severe.

How can I get malabsorption? Things or foods that cause it? Thank you

Many issues: The functioning gut will absorb the foods it processes when it is healthy. Af you have injury to the gut, from disease (cystic fibrosis, crohn's), surgical loss, food allergies, food intolerances, poor absorption will occur.Gluten sensitivity is a timely topic. No 40 red food dye & lactose intolerance, the list goes on. Some malabsorption is transient, like after diarrhea, some is long term.

Is it possible to have a chronic malabsorption problem that goes undetected, because the malabsorption is mild?

Sure: In fact many malabsorption problems are not recognized until the storage has been exhausted (vit B12 deficiency etc). Thus getting some routine blood work done periodically even in the absence of disease is not a bad idea.

Symptoms of fructose malabsorption?

Symptoms of fructose malabsorption?

Gas, bloat, diarrhea: Fructose is a sugar that can be malabsorbed, just like lactose (milk sugar); bacteria in the gut will ferment the undigested sugar; fermentation products cause gas, bloat, cramps, diarrhea-depending on the "dose" of fructose. Fructose is found in fruits, e.g. Pears, apples. High fructose corn syrup is not high fructose, but is compared to cs (all glucose). High fruct cs is similar to sucrose.

Why do you develop fructose malabsorption?

Fructose intolerance: Describes 2 possible conditions: hereditary fructose intolerance, a rare genetic disorder, is lack of an enzyme that breaks down fructose; it is serious and can lead to liver and kidney damage. Fructose malabsorption is difficulty digesting fructose and is less serious but can cause abdominal pain, gas, bloating and diarrhea. Restricting dietary fructose can help.

What is a good diet for someone with fructose malabsorption?

Simple choice: The patients with congenital or acquired fructose intolerance need only to avoid foods with this sugar in it. This is the sugar of all fruits and fruit juices. Sometimes a person with the problem can tolerate small amounts that may be contained in other foods without symptoms. Read labels of canned or processed foods to check for fructose content.
