A condition characterized by failure of the liver to perform its functions, which are vital for life. Failure can be seen: bleeding, fluid accumulation, yellow skin, no energy, confusion. Liver failure occurs acutely (rapid) or chronically (slow onset).

What is liver failure and how is it treated?

What is liver failure and how is it treated?

Won't keep you alive: The liver does multiple things - synthesizes proteins, metabolizes products to make them more useful or less harmful or easier to excrete, moves blood from the intestines to the main venous blood flow system (in the vena cava), etc. When the liver is hurt from a sudden insult (tylenol (acetaminophen) overdose, etc) or long-term exposure (alcohol, heptatitis c, etc) 1 or more of these functions can't be done. ...Read more

What happens when you have liver. Failure?

What happens when you have liver. Failure?

Bad things happen: The liver is necessary for life, so if the liver fails, bad things happen. Toxic chemicals that are natural byproducts of the human body start to build up (such as ammonia) and damage many organs. Necessary proteins that a normal liver makes, are no longer made (such as Albumin and the clotting proteins). Without albumin, a major protein in blood plasma, a person will swell up with fluid.... ...Read more

Since you did not hve luck with therapy, the best you can do is nuture your liver--avoid/minimize alcohol/drugs, get vaccinated for hepa, eat a healthy, balanced diet along with maintaining ideal body wt (obesity increases risk), and follow-up with doc regularly. Good luck. ...Read more

My sister was in a 'induced coma' for 12 days for drug overdose/liver-failure 6 years ago. After she woke she went permanently blind to this day, why?
