Hives, swelling of hands, feet, eyelids & lips called angioedema, breathing issues due to windpipe swelling or asthma & GI symptoms like nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain & diarrhea. I'm allergic to iodine. I am hashi hypothyroid. Can only take brand Synthroid (thyroxine) & cytomel. But when taken together I have a severe allergic reaction.

Check w/Pharmacist: If you mean taking the two pills at the same time causes a reaction, but taking either one by itself does not, then you could try taking them several hours apart (like one w/bkfst and other w/dinner). If that fails, will need to talk to endocrinologist to see if can manage on one agent. ...Read more

Are the brand name "synthroid" &levothyroxine equally effective? M taking synthroid. Can I switch 2 levothyroxine, looks like levothyroxine is cheaper

Levothyroxine is: cheaper since it's a generic, but the blood levels with Synthroid (thyroxine) are more consistent and reliable. It is a product with a "narrow therapeutic window" where generics can vary from batch to batch, company to company and prescription to prescription -- while the brand name product does not. If you can afford it, take the brand name drug. ...Read more

Same thing: Fish and shellfish have a tendency to concentrate iodine in their flesh. If you are allergic to iodine, often you will have a cross reactivity when you consume fish or shellfish. Need time to normal: Radio iodine therapy is used to treat graves' disease, by destroying the over active thyroid. It takes most patients a few months for the thyroid to drop to under-active levels. Once low thyroid is identified and Levoxyl started, it will take at least 3-4 weeks before levothyroxine has noticeable effects. Then it may take months to adjust to correct dose... Be patient while levels normalize! ...Read more
