Ten days out surgery to repair both meniscus in left knee, ankle and foot swollen. Sonogram for clot negative. What to do for normal?
Rest, ice & elevate!: Some swelling after surgery is normal. The amount and location may not be. The type of surgery is important, but post-op care is a very big factor. Simple ice and elevation with range of motion exercises when called for can prevent or reduce swelling. Sometimes rest alone with elevation of the feet to eye level for several days will do it. Joint surgery usually requires motion to heal properly. ...Read more

Repair vs removal: Both procedures are completed arthroscopically through small, fingernail sized incisions. You may have a meniscus repair or a partial menisectomy (removal). The repair is ideal, if possible, for preventing arthritic changes, but requires a longer recovery time. In either case recovery is relatively quick. Post-op rehab will concentrate on motion, & quad strength. Discuss options with your surgeon! ...Read more

Prob Meniscus: Although the phrase "medial extrusion" is an unusual description of a condition of the knee, it sounds as if you are dealing with a medial meniscus tear with instability of the meniscus. Most meniscal injuries/tears will not heal on their own due to the lack of blood supply. Surgery is therefore often indicated. See an orthopaedic surgeon for evaluation. ...Read more
