For now: Apply an ice pack, keep it elevated and stay off it. If it's just a simple sprain, you'll feel better tomorrow. If you don't, you need an x-ray, so bring your ankle to either a podiatrist or an orthopedist, both of whom will have x-rays in their office (better than an er), so you can get diagnosed and treated properly. Have it x-rayed: If you are getting constant pain that radiates, you should have it x-rayed, it could have a fracture or it could be ligamentous injury. You may need it immobilized for a short time to allow it to calm down then start range of motion exercises as soon as you can tolerate them . Evaluation needed: The uncomfortable grinding and especially the locking may be signs of cartilage damage within the knee joint. See a different MD: Have you ever had a MVA in the past like 1-10 years ago ? Is this on the R or the L, or both, knees. All around, lateral, medial, anterior, posterior, any other joints are involved ?, shoulders, lower back,etc. Have you seen a Dr.?, Have you had X rays ? are you on medications?, Do you have a diagnosis. Get X-ray if...: Sounds like a contusion to your thigh. ( bruise). If you are able to walk and weight bear on that side a fractured femur( thigh bone)extremely unlikely.
