I was diagnosed with afib and put on coumadin (warfarin). How will Coumadin (warfarin) affect my heart?

Prevent clots: The atrial fibrillation can result in clots forming inside the heart. Those clots can break lose, go to the brain, and cause a stroke. The Coumadin (warfarin) tends to prevent the clots from occurring. But it also carries the risk of bleeding especially if the blood gets too thin. ...Read more

Had saddle PE in 2013 on warfarin going to breathing physio any idea why my heart rate drops suddenly when slowly walking approx 10 metres?

Heart rate dropping: In association with exertion can be a warning sign of a number of different cardiac issues and is most likely unrelated to either the PE or the warfarin. You need to bring this to the attention of your health care professionals and ask to be EKG monitored during exertion to exclude more serious conditions. ...Read more

Had 2 uedvts. On warfarin for life now. What are the chances of getting another clot while on anticoagulants? I'm scared of stroke, pe, heart attack..

Hypercoagulable?: Did you get workup for hypercoagulable state? Abnormal clotting factors and blood proteins (protein s, protein c) may put you at lifelong risk for stroke and thrombosis. Coumadin (warfarin) is not a 100% protection (changes with diet or diarrhea etc, and you may need to stop Coumadin (warfarin) for pregnancy or surgeries). Worthwhile getting the full workup (hematology). ...Read more

Taking warfarin for heart, have hepc n cirohsis, gall stone...can I take walnuts?

I take warfarin & metoprolol. If I suspect a heart attack should I chew a 500mg aspirin?

Call 911: If you suspect a heart attack, the first thing you should do is call 911.However, in regards to your Coumadin (warfarin) use, you should still also take an Aspirin 325 mg. Although both are blood thinners, they work differently and Aspirin is the only one of the 2 found to decrease mortality with heart attacks. If you have angina, nitroglycerine is also good to have as needed at home. See your cardiologist. ...Read more

Pat. With prosthetic heart valve on warfarin and developed ich. When and whow we return anticoagulant?

The risk of: Hemorrhage complications in the above setting is 1% per year. If ich occur the anticiagulation have to be reverse and most probably the clot evacuated. When to restart is controversial depending on the prosthetic valve (mitral vs aortic), atrial fibrillation, enlarge atrial chamber and systolic ventricular dysfunction. Each case is different but up to 14 days may be safe. Neuro and cardiac follow. ...Read more

After Heart CABG better use Aspirin 100mg combination warfarin 2mg, or clopidogrel 75mg with warfarin 2mg??

Prob aspirin: It seems you may have a fib. So warfarin is important. The use of plavix (clopidogrel) is valuable after PTCA, but not proven to be any better than aspirin. Therefore, I suggest aspirin and warfarin would be better choice. ...Read more

Pat. With mitral prosthetic heart valve and develope sah. When we restart anticoagulant and we start by lmwh or warfarin?

Pat. With mitral prosthetic heart valve and develope sah. When we restart anticoagulant and we start by lmwh or warfarin?

No good answer: I'm presuming sah is "subarachnoid hemorrhage". The answer depends on if the mitral valve is bioprosthetic or mechanical (i presume mechanical in a 36 yo) and if the rhythm is sinus or atrial fib (common in this setting). There are no controlled trials to guide this. There is no right answer. Be guided by the cardiologist's experience that you know and trust. Good luck with this difficult situation. ...Read more
