Is it safe to take selenium sulfide while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Is it safe to take selenium sulfide while pregnant or breastfeeding?

No: Selenium sulfide is used in topical creams (for dermatitis, or "rash") and shampoos (notably selsun blue, for dandruff). The easy answer is yes and the complicated answer is no. The reason? It is categorized as "c" meaning there are no studies in pregnancy documenting it's safety. So, doctors say, "if the benefits outweigh the unknown risks, go ahead." so...Shampoo -- yes. Topical cream -- no.

Pregnancy (Definition)

When your due date arrives, you will be more than ready to have your baby! Most women deliver the baby somewhere between 37 and 42 weeks. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, only 5% of babies arrive on the exact due date. Approximately 7% of babies are not delivered by 42 weeks, and when that happens, it is referred to ...Read more

Can you use selenium sulfide shampoo on your body to treat body ringworm?

Can you use selenium sulfide shampoo on your body to treat body ringworm?

Not exactly: For what people call "ringworm", the medical name is tinea corporis, and the treatment is lotriminaf (or a similar antifungal). The lotriminaf is over-the-counter. For tinea versicolor, which is different from tinea corporis, and looks more like lots of little spots on the oilier parts of the body (usually the trunk, neck, face), one can use the 2.5% selenium sulfide lotion or shampoo.

What do you suggest if I have dandruff selenium sulfide treatment problems?

What do you suggest if I have dandruff selenium sulfide treatment problems?

Anti-dandruff 'poos: Dandruff is associated with malassezia fungus infection. Try other over-the-counter dandruff shampoos, and look for one that contains zinc pyrithione, which can reduce the fungus; salicylic acid, which works as a sort of scrub to slough off dead skin; or ketoconazole, which works against a broad array of fungi. See a Dermatologist if these don't work. Take care.

Does head and shoulders selenium sulfide help ringworm on scalp?

Does head and shoulders selenium sulfide help ringworm on scalp?

No: Selenium-containing dandruff shampoo helps treat a mild fungus on the skin, called tinea versicolor. The shampoo doesn't get rid of ringworm on the scalp, which is a different type of tinea infection, called tinea capitis. A dermatologist or a primary care doctor can help with ringworm of the scalp.

How Long?: Did you get a definitive diagnosis for tinea versicolor? How long have you been using the medication? It often takes a few weeks before you see results. If after 4-6 wks you don't see any improvement, talk to your dermatologist for a re-evaluation and change of medication.

Anti-dandruff 'poos: Dandruff is associated with malassezia fungus infection. Selenium sulfide should work well but you can also try dandruff shampoos that contains zinc pyrithione, which can reduce the fungus; salicylic acid, which works as a sort of scrub to slough off dead skin; or ketoconazole, which works against a broad array of fungi. See a Dermatologist if these don't work. Take care.

I need a shampoo with 2% of selenium sulfide to treat tinea versicolor. Which one do you recommend I get?

Dr. Binh Ngo Dr. Ngo
1 doctor agreed:

Selsun Blue: Selsun blue contains selenium sulfide. Other shampoo that can treat this condition contains 1% ketoconazole (available over the counter) and 2% ketoconazole (available by prescription). If the tinea versicolor is extensive and not improving with the shampoos, you should visit your dermatologist to start on an oral pill.

I think I have 2 ringworms on my scalp. Will washing with selsun blue get rid of them? It says it has 1% selenium sulfide as the active ingredient.

Unlikely: If it is true scalp ringworm, the topical lotions can reduce the surface growth but the problem is deeper. Scalp ringworm gets down into the root system of the hair and usually requires oral prescription meds that get there through the blood. IF your problem is really a ringworm, it is unlikely to go away with such treatment.

I was prescribed selenium sulfide 2.5 shampoo and think I'm having an adverse reaction (skin irritation, no rash), how long before it goes away?

A few days: The irritant or allergic contact reaction should go away in a few days without continuing contact. A topical cortisone may hasten the recovery a little.

I just bough selsun blue with selenium sulfide how to apply?, how long till you rinse it?, and how often I need to re do? 1every week, 1 every 2 week

Seborrhea: Selsun blue is a brand name shampoo for the treatment of seborrhea (dandruff). Most people benefit by shampooing to a good lather and then letting the medication sit on the scalp for about 5 minutes. You want this time to penetrate the scalp. Depending on your severity depends how often you may use it. If it is severe a dermatologist can rx a stronger shampoo if needed.

Won't blind you: It'll heal itself. You're almost a grown man and need to get fears that you must surely recognize as unrealistic under control. You list "anxiety" as a problem -- this would be a great time talk with a therapist or counselor about why you have such fears as this and what you can do to be happier as life goes on.

Hi I have tinea versicolor around my stomach and it is bad. I tried selsun blue 1% selenium sulfide but it just made the pigmentation of my skin worse?

Dermatologist: I would advise seeing a dermatologist. It is possible it isn't times verso color at all or may need different management.

If a rash is Pityrosporum Folliculitis would Selsun selenium sulfide shampoo and an antifungal spray/cream help clear it up? What would work faster?

If a rash is Pityrosporum Folliculitis would Selsun selenium sulfide shampoo and an antifungal spray/cream help clear it up? What would work faster?

Try different stuff: Lots of options. Find out which works. I know of people sleeping painted blue with dandruff shampoo, and others who get fine control taking a ketoconazole 400 mg tablet before working up a sweat in the gym, once a month. I'm glad you got the diagnosis made -- it gets missed a lot. Lots of stuff works. You get to choose. Best wshes.
