How does imodium (loperamide) actually work, anyway? How bad can it be to overdose?

How does imodium (loperamide) actually work, anyway? How bad can it be to overdose?

Imodium (loperamide): Imodium anti-diarrheals are actually a drug called loperamide. This drug acts on the walls of the gut inhibiting their movement and increasing the tone in the sphincter muscle of your anus. This causes your feces to stop moving in your gut allowing your body to absorb more of the water. The drug is fairly safe, however large overdosing can cause constipation, paralytic ileus or toxic megacolon. ...Read more

I was very ill and went to the doctor. He did not say the diagnosis but prescribed the following: antibiotics, zofer, imodium, (loperamide) scopex. What's it for?

Antibiotics: None of these medications is an antibiotic. One is used to inhibit vomiting, one to try to stop diarrhea and the last is used to treat spasm of the stomach. Cannot imagine that these were not discussed with you or that the doctor did not entertain a diagnosis. You might want to go back ; establish better communication. Good luck. ...Read more

I used some imodium (loperamide) for my persistent diarrhea. But I keep having an urge to go without passing anything. Flatulence as well. Please advise.

Should see doc..: It is possible that you have diarrhea-predominant ibs (irritable bowel syndrome), but have some other common symptoms to ibs include bloating, gasiness, frequent/urge to have bm, early satiety, dyspepsia symptoms etc... Without further detail, i can't be for sure. Nevertheless, being 22 and no other health issues, ibs is more likely, especially if this has been an ongoing issue for you.
Good luck. ...Read more

Which of the follow is most effective: pepto bismol, imodium, (loperamide) or kaopectate?

Which of the follow is most effective: pepto bismol, imodium, (loperamide) or kaopectate?

Effective at which?: Kaopectate basically is pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate). Both have bismuth salicylic acid which may have some antibacterial properties. Both are Aspirin products though and cannot be given to children or pregnant women or those otherwise intolerant of aspirin. Immodium does not treat the root cause of the diarrhea but has great stopping power. It wins. ...Read more

Will imodium (loperamide) work with stomach flu diarrhea and can I drink alcohol?

Will imodium (loperamide) work with stomach flu diarrhea and can I drink alcohol?

Maynot need Immodium: It depends on the cause of the diarrhea. If someone develop salmonellosis or infection caused by salmonella bacteria, just drinking fluids and eating simple, soft and bland diet might be enough. Having bloody diarrhea or any other complications or diarrhea lasting more than 3-4 days, needs medical attention from a physician. Thanks. ...Read more

Not recommended: Taking imodium (loperamide) daily could eventually lead to constipation, obstruction and severe digestive problems. Help please! Is constipation and lower back pain a side effect of imodium (loperamide)?

Can...: Imodium (loperamide) is an over-the-counter medication used for treatment of diarrhea. It should be used as needed, its use limited and not continued once bowel movements have normalized. If symptoms persist despite cessation of imodium, (loperamide) consultation with your dr. Is recommended. ...Read more

Can I take bentyl, beano, gas-x, and imodium (loperamide) all in the same day? Thanks in advance.

Yes: Yes you can- None of these drugs should interact with the others, however, the immodium will slow down the intestine transit time and you should be aware of this. Bentyl (dicyclomine) an antispasm medicine might do the same. You should consult with your doctor before using both immodium and bentyl (dicyclomine) in one day. Also, slowing down the Gastrointestinal tract, could make a gas problem worse instead of better. ...Read more
