What is the definition of spastic ileus?

What is the definition of spastic ileus?

Ileus: Ileus is the development of distention of the intestines as a result of decreased peristaltic motility. Usually this is the response of the gut to some type of noxious stimulus, either traumatic, infectious or inflammatory. The distension can mimic bowel obstruction and this needs to be differentiated, typically by watchful waiting. Ileus will resolve by correcting the underlying cause.

My son has been diagnosed with an ileus (no surgery). How can I find out cause and ways to prevent. He was told by his gastro to eat more fiber...

Multiple causes: Your son has a ileus. He has most likely had a recent illness. He may have a respiratory virus etc. This can cause ileus. Electrolytes like potassium being abnormal can also cause ileus. It does not mean blockage. Time and support usually work. Narcotic medication can also cause ileus. A diet high in fiber may help minimize ileus but treating underlying cause is still important.

Any ideas why pancreatitis cause an ileus?

Any ideas why pancreatitis cause an ileus?

Adynamic ileus: Is caused by different things, including inflammation. Pancreatitis, or inflammation of pancreas, causes irritation of peritoneal cavity, causing intestinal motility to slow down or stop, which is the cause of adynamic ileus. Typically, ileus caused by pancreatitis persists longer than the pancreatitis itself.

My doctor says I have ileus, but I don't understand. What does it mean?

Sluggish intestines: Intestinal motility paralysis, or ileus, is seen after abdominal surgery, or it can be associated with many medical conditions. It resolves as the conditions improve, or with recovery from the surgery.

Moderate amount of stool in colon and mild ileus. What is the best and fastest way to relieve all this backup of stool and gas? What should I avoid?

Moderate amount of stool in colon and mild ileus. What is the best and fastest way to relieve all this backup of stool and gas? What should I avoid?

Depends on the cause: Ileus means that there is loss of the normal propulsive ability of the gastrointestinal tract - it can be mild or severe, depending on the cause. Many post-op ileus is caused by narcotics taken for pain control. This is often manifest as constipation. The treatment for this is walking, reducing narcotic intake, drinking enough water and on occasion, taking a laxative.

Is ileus with fecal stasis dangerous?

Not usually: An ileus is a slowing down of the motility or flow through the bowel, and can occur typically when someone is taking a lot of pain meds, or has recently had a big operation. Some metabolic problems can cause it also. It generally doesn't require an operation, contrary to a bowel obstruction, which may. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the two. A surgeon can help differentiate.

Can small ileus be mistaken for hiatal herna?

Can small ileus be mistaken for hiatal herna?

Different problems: A hiatal hernia is when part of the stomach squeezes up into the chest area through a weak spot in the sheet of muscle (the diaphragm) that separates the chest from the abdomen. A hiatal hernia should not resemble an ileus, which is not a part of the body, but is a condition in which the intestines are very quiet and not moving. With an ilieus, the stomach won't empty and the person will vomit.

What should I do for an infection of the ileus?

Intestine or pelvis?: Ileus is slowing down of the intestines. Infection of the ileus is not a proper term. If you mean infection of the ileum, it could mean the end of the small intestine or one of the pelvic bones. You will need to be more specific about which one you mean.
