I Am Terrified That My Spotting Is More Serious Than Just Missing 3 Birth Control Pills

I am on continuous birth control pills mainly due to uterine fibroids. All of a sudden this week I'm having a period. I have not missed a pill or been more than 2 hours late taking a pill. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Possibly: I'm assuming that you were given birth control pills continuously as an inexpensive way to control abnormal bleeding. You are experiencing breakthrough bleeding on the pill which is common. Birth control pills contain estrogen and progesterone, which may make your fibroid grow. My concern in your case is this: have you had a workup of your fibroid's with CBC, ultrasound, MRI, and hysteroscopy. ...Read more
Birth Control Pills (Definition)
Also known as oral contraceptives, birth control pills are highly effective oral medications that use hormones to prevent pregnancy. There are two main types of birth control pills: one with estrogen and progestin (also known as the combination pill) and one with just progestin. The two main ways they prevent pregnancy are: 1) The hormones thicken the cervical mucous, which keeps sperm from entering the uterus on their way to the egg; and 2) By maintaining a level of hormone in the blood stream that prevents the ...Read more

Im having menstrual issues, should I be worried? Im on necon 1/35 (green) birth control and haven't missed one pill. I been on them for about 3 months. My dr. Has me skipping the placebo & starting a new pack because i've been having excessive, unexpected

That : That is abnormal to have bleeding for 8 days as well as having the excessive, unexpected, and long durations of bleeding. Given your history, please have your gynecologists reevaluate you. There is also a possibility that you might need a different type of birth control pill. If you develop increased bleeding, feel light-headed/faint, or have pain then you would need to be seen as an emergency. ...Read more

Wha's going on? If i used birth control for 6 months, without any breakthrough bleeding but i skipped my period this past month by just taking my active pills and not taking the inactive pills (for a special occasion) and am having breakthrough bleeding n

Since : Since you have been using your pills correctly, you have a less than 1% chance of being pregnant. More likely, the breakthrough bleeding is a side effect from taking the active pills to skip your last period. Technically, the active pills should cause high enough hormone levels to keep the uterine lining that builds up during the month from sloughing off. However, in some women, when a period is skipped the lining builds up so much that it just starts to come off despite the active pills leading to breakthrough bleeding. This should normalize for you with your next cycle. If you continue to have abnormal or breakthrough bleeding, give your doctor a call. Good luck! ...Read more

I took 3 birth control pills at once because I missed two. This was about a week ago. My breasts are SUPER tender/sensitive. Pregnant/too many pills?

Hard to say: The pill works by preventing egg release. It does that by maintaining a steady hormone level that would be made by a placenta. Doing so fools your body into believing you are already pregnant, saving eggs for later. If you missed enough pills, the drop in hormone level may have allowed egg release and set you up for pregnancy. The extra pills could also effect your system. Time will tell. ...Read more

What's going on?! if i used birth control for 6 months, without any breakthrough bleeding but i skipped my period this past month by just taking my active pills and not taking the inactive pills (for a special occasion) and am having breakthrough bleeding

Side effects: Most women who take birth control pills have no side effects, but the most common side effect in the first 1-3 months is irregular bleeding that gets better over time. Missed pills can also cause breakthrough bleeding. Extending the cycle increases risk of btb. Otc meds such as Ibuprofen or Naproxen can help breakthrough bleeding. ...Read more

I received an abortion (surgical) in early 12/13. Afterwards i started taking birth control (sprintec) but it is now early 2/14 and still no period. I have gotten cramps, bloating ect., what's wrong?

Probably normal: During the procedure, the lining of your your uterus is removed along with the pregnancy. Birth control pills can also thin the lining. So the combination may make your periods very light for a while. So long as your pregnancy test is negative, i wouldn't be worried yet. But if you don't resume at least light bleeding within the next 2-3 cycles, i might see your doctor to rule out scar tissue. ...Read more
