Depends: Some people get drowsy with just 10 mg , others can take 100 mg without any drowsiness. The drowsiness effect tends to decline after a few days. I think Zyrtec is a better option because it is just as effective and the drowsy effect is at least 80% less than Atarax (hydroxyzine). ...Read more

Post-nasal drips?: If the cough is from post-nasal drips , then I prefer using cetirizine or fexofenadine. A better option would be a nasal steroid. Yes: Claritin is a second generation antihistamine which causes much less drowsiness than first generation antihistamine, like benadryl (diphenhydramine). The number of people who feel drowsy on Claritin is so low that it is labeled "non-drowsy". But each of us is unique. I have plenty of patients who feel drowsy on claritin, especially petite women. ...Read more
