Can you tell me can I have genital herpes even without outbreaks and tested negative on hsv1 & hsv2 after 6 mos?
If you already have hsv1 (cold sores) are you immune to it? So you would not be able to get genital herpes from hsv1?
I've had hsv1 my hole life. I gave my boyfriend oral with a coldsore and then had unprotected sex. What are the chances of me getting genital herpes?
HSV1: Cold sores spread from person to person by close personal contact, such as kissing. Cold sores are caused by a herpes simplex virus (hsv-1) closely related to the one that causes genital herpes (hsv-2). Both of these herpes simplex viruses can affect your mouth or your genitals, and can be spread via oral sex. In this situation you may get them especially since you were having an outbreak. ...Read more
HSV2 igg 1.5 IGM neg no s/s of infection. Never lesions, Thoughts. False (+) or (+) genital herpes infection. Virus dormant like HSV1? any worries
Maybe false positive: Edited, correcting a misunderstanding in my initial reply: Most HSV2 IgG tests, e.g. HerpeSelect®), are officially positive at ELISA ratio 1.1 or higher. However, it is reliably positve only at 3.5 or higher. With your value of 1.5, there's at least a 50:50 chance you do NOT have HSV2, despite the test result. Speak with your doctor about confirmatory testing, e.g. Western blot test. ...Read more
My husband has hsv1 with no symptoms of cold sores, can I still get genital herpes from this through oral sex?
There are two separate herpes viruses. One cannot transmit a virus they do not have.
75% of adults have hsv 1 already. We now understand that 90% of those do not have outbreaks. But, viral shedding does occur and contagiousness is common even without an outbreak. Hsv 2, the 'genital' herpes, is found in 25% of humans. ...Read more
If 80% of us pop. Carry hsv1 virus why isn't genital herpes much more common with oral sex being such a popular activity?
You're right: With the growing popularity of oral sex activity, the hsv2 virus is becoming more common. It used to be that hsv1 was oral and hsv2 was genital. It is now recognized that they are both similar viruses that can affect either site. The strain is truly irrelevant as they are both highly contagious, prone to recurrent eruptions, treated with anti-viral medications & can lead to permanent nerve damage. ...Read more
Will my doc allow me to suppress my genital herpes after just my 1st outbreak of hsv1 on my genitals I'm afraid to pass this on to my kids?
Manageable risks: If a mother delivers vaginally with her first genital outbreak, there is ~30% risk the baby could get it and have a terrible illness. If a recurrent outbreak, this drops to ~4% but suppression of outbreaks (meds) or c-section delivery before the membranes are open 4 hours can cancel the risk. Rarely, some women shed herpes without an outbreak and could pass it, baby sick around 2 wks. ...Read more

I got a cold sore for the first time and scared me to death. But since I have what theyy call "hsv1" is it likelyy to get genital herpes faster!?
No risk, no worries: Probably you have had your oral HSV1 infection a long time, even though you've only had your first outbreak. Half of all adults have oral HSV1. Oral HSV1 is not likely to ever infect your genital area; you are immune to transferring it to anywhere else on your body. Having HSV1 makes you slightly less susceptible to HSV2, the usual cause of genital herpes. ...Read more

If a partner already has HSV1 and I perform oral sex on him at the "tingle" stage before a cold sore, how likely that he could get Genital Herpes?
If you have oral herpes and it is HSV 1, and your partner already has HSV 1, then you will not transmit the infection with or without the sore.

A girl says she takes a prescription med for cold sores she gets in mouth. I thought meds are for genital herpes? Why would she take for hsv1?
To relieve symptoms.: Hsv1 occurs as oral herpes and is also called herpes labialis. Cold sores are as a result of hsv1 and can be extremely uncomfortable if they are allowed to run their course. Medications given for control of the symptoms for blisters and painful mouth conditions help tremendously and are similar to the medications for controlling hsv2 which is found in genital herpes. ...Read more

Make sure you both are tested for hsv type 1 and 2. It was previously thought that type 1 was only localzed to the mouth and type 2 to the genitals, but that is not correct. Also consider the fact that your gilrfriend already carried the virus and you did not give it to her by giving her oral sex.

My husband gave me genital herpes through a canker sore--but his STD test came back negative for hsv1? Why is that? I have only had one sexual partner: my husband. I contracted genital herpes because he had a canker sore in his mouth and performed oral se
The tests for viral presence and accurate identification (hsv-1 and hsv-2) are not 100% accurate. They tend to look for antibodies for the particular virus, which may not have yet been detectable when the test was performed.
A re-test with one of the newer screening tests is advisable. ...Read more

Canker sores: Aphthous stomatitis is not due to herpes simplex. Dr. Namey and dr. Perkins have provided excellent advice and would read these carefully. The location of the herpetic lesions (oral v. Genital) no longer is specific for types 1;2. Cold sores may be herpetic, but not canker sores. ...Read more
I currently have an outbreak of genital herpes simplex 1 (diagnosed recently). Do I need to be lysol wiping the toilet seat for infection control?
Here are some. ..: If the toilet you have used is just for you, it's absolutely no need to disinfect.... If using public toilets, it's optional because the toilet users after you have no chance to contact your out-breaking sites with their broken-very unlikely-skin. So, the likelihood to transmit herpes virus is almost next-to-none. Clinically, I don't believe there has been a study being done to address the answer. ...Read more

My bf gave me hsv1 orally onto my vagina. Seeing as tho he already has this virus in his system can it cause him 2 get herpes on his genital area too?
Unlikely.: It is generally thought that getting herpes a second time is much harder than getting it the first time. Studies have shown that a person with oral herpes can catch a new case of genital herpes. Other studies have shown that this is rare - but it is possible. Your BF should wear condoms, and you should both be treated with an oral antiviral (Valtrex (valacyclovir) or Famvir). ...Read more
