My toenail is falling off from a trama a few months ago but there is a new one about halfway grown behind/underneath it. Is it safe to paint it?

You Decide...: I'm not sure just what you mean by safe, but, I can offer you this. Recently traumatized nails are more susceptible to developing fungal infections. Applying nail polish, and the subsequent use of polish removers, may put your new toenail at an increased risk of developing a nail fungus and all the issues of the involved treatment. Should I have my big toenail removed? Two months after being damaged, the toenail is still completely black and has no new growth at the base. However, because of the blood underneath the nail, the sides have started to curve down and keep growing into my

Hello.: Hello. This falls under the perview of podiatry. The problem with bathroom surgery is that, if you do not have a good functional understanding of area being worked on, it may not work or you may end up with unforseen complications (such as infections). As the nail grows into one or both sides of the paronychium (nail bed) is likely to become more painful and can become infected. At this point, you are getting recurrence of the ingrowing of the nail (onychocryptosis). You also noted that there is no nail growth from the base. If the nail issue is not addressed appropriately, you could develop a chronic abnormality of the nail (i.e., crooked). One approach is a partial wedge resection, in which the podiatrist cuts back part of the lateral nail plate. Sometimes the nail needs to be removed. I suggest you see a podiatrist for assistance. Take care. ...Read more

Discovered one white spot with some black flecks under my big toe nail. I don't know how long it has been there, as I've had nail polish for months.

Discovered one white: White discoloration usually comes from fungal infection, black could be from fungal infection/dry blood/very rarely skin cancer. It is best to see a podiatrist to get examined, possibly cut back the toenail and get sample of the nail for culture and possibly biopsy of the skin under the toenail, if needed. ...Read more

After wearing high heels for a very long time one day most of my foot was numb now not quite a year later my big toes are partially numb still and my legs feel like they're just starting to fall asleep for long peiods of time?

Both big toenails discoloured, blue looking; right one particularly looks as though black streak in it. Slight pain but nothing major. What to do?

Microtrauma: It sounds like your toenails are hitting the end of your shoe. This usually happens if the toe box is either too small (toe is pressed up against the end) or too large (foot is sliding around and the toe is hitting the end). This is very common in runners--it can lead to either thickening of the nail, or it may eventually turn black and fall off--a new nail will grow in within a year. ...Read more

Started taking oral terbinafine, told toenails need to grow out so it can take months, but how long before I see results for jock itch? Immediate?

No, the results: Won't be immediate. But, it should help. It could take couple of weeks to months. I would advise using a topical antifungal cream to the region of the jock itch. The terbinafine indication is for nails not jock itch, but, it should work nonetheless over time. ...Read more
