Vitamins: Yes, you can but there will be interactions. This is one of the issues with multivitamin and mineral preparations and why getting your nutrients from regular food is best. Just one example of interactions: all minerals with a chemical 'double plus' like calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc and copper get absorbed through the same channel and same area of the small intestine. Absorption of one will block. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Iron supplements and vit d, calicum. How does it effect absorption or should it be taken how far spart?
Why taking iron?: Vit d helps calcium absorption so it's fine to take together (though if your blood level's ok it's not necessary). While it's safe to take iron at the same time, minerals can compete for absorption so it might be best to take at a different time than calcium.Vit c improves iron absorption. However, iron is generally not wise to take after menopause unless you are sure you're deficient! see comment:. ...Read more

Am taking 50k iu vit 8wks for vit d deficiency. Should i take magnesium as well to support absorption and decrease muscle pain? If so what dosage? Ty!
Don't think so: I see no reason to take magnesium with this good dose of vit d. If you wonder about deficiency of magnesium, you can ask your doc to check levels. It is ok to take otc mag 250 mg or 400mg daily for a few days on your own without blood test. But, if you you have kidney disease or take other prescriptions you need to clear it with your doc since interaction may occur. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
How much mag should I take against 500mg ca & vit D3 for osteoporosis? Can they also be taken together without competing for absorption?
Ive been advised to take calcium and vitamin D supplements as my last blood test showed I have low calcium levels. How long will they take to work?
Is it ok to take calcium, vitamin D3 and magnesium together? Or do calcium and magnesium compete for absorption?
OK, to a degree but:: Calcium ; magnesium are often packaged together both in supplements ; foods. They compete a bit; calcium may reduce mag. Absorption but mag. Does not seem to reduce cal. Absorption. Those low in mag. Have difficulty absorbing cal.; if deficient in mag. It may be best to take it separately. http://www.nutraceuticalsworld.com/contents/view_breaking-news/2011-09-14/magnesium-is-key-to-calcium-uptake/. ...Read more

It depends on:: All adults need to take 5-8000 iu/day of Vitamin D3 in fall and winter months as we can not get any D from the sun (unless in the deep South). We can get adequate D from spending time in the mid-day sun in spring and summer, but if you don't get much sun or use sunscreen then it is reasonable to take D year-round.
