What can I do to manage pain from osteoarthritis? What medicine (or other means) works best to relieve severe pain from osteoarthritis?

Many things: Even though you have arthritis, you need to find a way to continue to exercise. Non-impact things are the best -- swimming, biking, etc. Depending on where the arthritis is can also tailor your treatment. Even just a little exercise each day makes a difference. Medicine includes tylenol (acetaminophen) and anti-inflammatories. Consult with your primary physician to make sure there are no interactions. ...Read more

What is better as anti inflamatory, Advil or Aleve (naproxen) for runners? And how often can we use them without risking complications from overuse?

What is better as anti inflamatory, Advil or Aleve (naproxen) for runners? And how often can we use them without risking complications from overuse?

Also...: Agree with dr. Vallury, but also consider that Aleve (naproxen) is longer acting than advil (~12 hours vs. 6-8). Doesn't necessarily work better but longer duration. Never take nsaids prior to long runs (>8 miles or so) because of the risk of low serum sodium and negative effects on your kidneys. ...Read more

How long does it take to get physically add. To pain meds & would it help to switch from opiates to muscle relaxers to relieve chronic lower back pain?

Physical Dependence: Is not addiction and is a normal consequence of chronic opiate use. Addiction is marked by compulsive and uncontrolled use with preoccupation and adverse consequences. A withdrawal syndrome with discontinuation does not imply addiction. Discuss your concerns with your doctor. Non-opiates like muscle relaxants and snri's can help reduce your reliance on opiates to a limited extent. ...Read more

How does an nsaid differ from tylenol (acetaminophen)?

How does an nsaid differ from tylenol (acetaminophen)?

Anti-inflammatoy.: Nsaid is short for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. These drugs, in addition to being pain killing, stop inflammation. Tylenol, (acetaminophen) however, does not stop inflammation. It only stops pain, which means it is an analgesic. So if you need to stop inflammation, like in arthritis, use an nsaid, not tylenol (acetaminophen). ...Read more

How can I tell the difference between heat rash, and a reaction to taking Aleve (naproxen). Do either require medical attention?

Not enough info: As to skin rashes, seeing IS believing. I recommend that, if you can't get in to see your own doctor, you go to an urgent care center for evaluation. Alternatively, you could do a Virtual Consult with one of our doctors. You would need to do an audiovisual consult and upload a picture of the rash. The urgency depends on the severity of your symptoms. ...Read more
