How Do Doctors Determine Whether I Need A Hard Cast Or A Soft Cast For My Hand
Type of fracture: Whether you are placed in a splint ("soft cast") or regular hard cast depends upon the type of fracture you have, and the length of time you will need to keep it on. If the fracture is minor, stable and will heal in a short period of time, a splint is easier and often more comfortable. If your fracture requires 3-4 weeks or more to heal, then a cast is more durable and more practical. ...Read more
Could my doctor give me a hard cast for wrist tendonitis. As I always take my splint off. I just want to relax my wrist. Splint isn't working.
Would not: A cast is usu for joint /bone fracture because the joint needs to immobilize for healing. You have tendonitis -inflammation of tendon due to some repetitive use, you should continue as instructed by your doctor to use the splint when you use the wrist repetitive, take anti-infl and give time because it takes few weeks to few months to heal the tendon. ...Read more
Wrist tendonitis. I take my splint off all the time. Now if I ask for a hard cast that I can't take off for a few weeks so it can rest. Do you think its a possibility my doctor could. Work with children?
Doctors don't know what's wrong with my hand, had 3 aces done seperatly, 1 cast, 2 weeks... Worse like it hasn't gotten better. No fracture. Confused!

I have a fx on the tip of my thumb and a split is very painful. I want cast but doc says can't check for circ. My circ. Is fine. Should I go elsewhere?
Your doctor is: Correct. Nothing is wrong with getting a 2nd opinion, especially from an orthopaedic surgeon. But your doctor is correct. The problem is not your current circulation, which is fine, but if you apply certain dressing/cast, splint on your finger tip, especially if not done properly, it will act as a tourniquet, cutting off circulation, and resulting in you losing the tip of your thumb, as it dies... ...Read more

Hey doc! From about month and 3 weeks, my son got thumb hairline fracture, he casted it....**got cast off** now there is cracking sound it moves.....?
Ligaments: As long as the finger is moving without pain and with close to full range of motion, the snapping you are hearing is likely from the ligaments rather than the bone, but be sure your orthopedist is aware of it. ...Read more
Longarm cast removed 1 week ago for a distal radial and distal ulnar fracture & im having achy elboy pain should I be concerned? I had the cast on for three weeks and have been out of it for one week today just wearing a brace for wrist support. My doctor
Normal: Stiffness after being in a long arm cast is a normal finding, especially in adults. If you are seeing an occupational therapist/hand therapist for you wrist, they will be able to help with the elbow as well. If not, normal daily activities should help decrease the stiffness over time. Best of luck! ...Read more
Should I take my son to the doctors? Two days ago my 20month old son got his toes hurt bad we took him to the ER and he had a procedure called repair nail bed foot on two toes on his right foot he now has to wear a cast going up his whole leg and foot but
It: It sounds like he had some sort of procedure for a toenail on 2 toes, if I'm reading your question correctly (help us help you by using punctuation). If this is correct, bleeding is normal, and they should have warned you about it. But now, at 2 days, there shouldn't be any new blood. If he's currently bleeding, then my answer is yes, take him back to the er. If it's old, dry blood on the bandage, there is no need to panic. But I assume you have a follow-up appointment to check on this in the next few days, right? ...Read more
About 3/4 months ago I was taken to A&E with a suspected scaphoid fracture I was seen by 2 doctors and was put in a thumb spica (not a cast) for 10 days because they suspected the scaphoid was broken. I later had another appointment for an X-ray to decid
Varies: Scaphoid fractures are often difficult to fully assess with X-ray. Often a ct scan or MRI is used if someone has persistent pain and X-rays look ok. Sometimes rather than doing a lot of initial studies, we will treat a patient in a splint if they have an exam and X-rays could be consistent with a scaphoid fracture, but then dc their splint if their exam and X-ray normalize. ...Read more
My son broke his wrist near the radial artery, now it pops when he lifts his arm and has numbness in his thumb. Is this normal? The doctor splinted it until the swelling goes down to have a cast put on.
I fracture my metacarpal, index finger I went to the doctor they took X-ray they told me that they gave me medicine and told me I have to go with a specialist they put cast on one side and I was wondering do I have to go or could it heled itself?
While fractures of the small finger metacarpal are quite common and only rarely cause problems, this does not apply to the index finger. We divide the hand into 2 segments--a mobile unit with the ring and small finger and a "fixed" unit with the index and middle fingers. There is less "play" in the joints to the index and middle fingers and therefore they tolerate less deformity. It also takes a lot more energy to break the index finger metacarpal than the other ones.
That said, you have a risk of healing in a shortened or rotated position that can affect grip strength or cause the fingers to overlap. A good hand surgeon will evaluate the clinical as well as radiographic deformity. That is--some deformity will not show up on the x-rays and may only show up by moving and examining the hand.
You should definitely see a specialist for this particular injury. ...Read more
