How Do Doctors Determine Whether I Need A Hard Cast Or A Soft Cast For My Hand
Type of fracture: Whether you are placed in a splint ("soft cast") or regular hard cast depends upon the type of fracture you have, and the length of time you will need to keep it on. If the fracture is minor, stable and will heal in a short period of time, a splint is easier and often more comfortable. If your fracture requires 3-4 weeks or more to heal, then a cast is more durable and more practical. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I would like to know everything about casts and broken wrists. How long do you have a cast on for a broken wrist?
Broken wrist: Is a very big term. It can mean a hairline fracture in a bone tha heals fast or a displaced fracture in a bone that has bad blood supply. Simple nondisplaced fractures are casted for 3-4 weeks often but complex fractures in some bones of the wrist ( that dont have surgery) can be casted for 9-12 weeks. The inure, the ;ovation, the pattern, health factors, smoking, all play a role in time to "heal". ...Read more
I have a hard time bearing weight on my foot how can I ask or persuade Doctor for a boot? even though my foot is not broken
Not that Difficult.: There are many other reasons , other than a fracture where wearing a boot is warranted. Included, but not limited to, are sprain, strain, swelling and instability. These are the big ones other than fracture. If the symptoms are somewhat supported by the history and exam, the boot is what you get. If there is a reluctance, then find another doctor. It's just that simple. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Depends on fx: Some ulna fractures do not require a cast. Others may actually require surgery. A lot depends on the location of your ulna fracture; is it close to the wrist? Or is it near the elbow? Is it displaced? It would be best to discuss this with an Orthopaedic surgeon who can examine you and review your xrays. Some ulna fractures may be treated in a long arm cast that immobilizes both your wrist and elbo ...Read more

I fractured my hand (brawler's fracture) but do not want to have a cast because I need to type for work. What can I do?
How do I determine (without an X-ray machine) if I have broken or dislocated the small toe on my right foot?
It can be difficult: Without an x-ray, you may not be able to diagnose a fracture. Some fractures are obvious without an x-ray but some are not. Dislocations often times are easier to diagnose without an x-ray but you won't necessarily be able to diagnose a toe dislocation without an x-ray. In short, if you are concerned about the possibility of a toe fracture or dislocation, see an orthopaedic doctor and get x-rays. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Tomorrow I am having my knuckle bone removed out of my pinky toe. Will i be given a special boot or shoe? I just want to know what I have to look for.
Probably yes: Typically, after the "knuckle", what doctors call the head of the phalanx, is removed, the toe is dressed with a gauze dressing and a post-op shoe is dispensed. Depending on the surgery and the surgeon, a patient will be in the post-op shoe for up to 4 weeks. ...Read more
Diagnosed with a carpal fracture and am waiting 30 days to see specialist. What can I do with the fractured hand while i wait, as to not worsen it?
COnsult: I would not be waiting 30 days unless this is an insignificant carpal fracture. If this is a scaphoid / navicular, lunate or capitate fracture, you need to be seen sooner. In the meantime, elevate, ice and rest your hand. Hopefully it is splinted and protected. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
