Heart Murmur (Overview)

A heart murmur is a sound heard by a stethoscope made by the vibration of blood flow. It can be a normal finding in young healthy people, or can represent abnormal leakage (regurgitation) of a valve, valve narrowing (stenosis), or a congenital condition such as an atrial septal defect, a ventricular septal defect, or patent ductus arteriosus.

What causes a heart murmur? I was diagnosed with a heart murmur as a child. Should I be worried as an adult? What causes heart murmurs and are there any symptoms to look for?

A: A murmur is simply a sound coming from the heart. It could mean nothing or be very serious and require treatment and follow -up.

See a cardiologist and get an echocadiogram with doppler of your heart. This will tell the story. And you will know exactly what you need to do if anything.

How do you treat a heart murmur?

How do you treat a heart murmur?

It varies: A heart murmur is simply an extra sound coming from the heart. It does not necessarily mean there is a problem to treat. In fact, most children with heart murmurs have no heart disease at all. These are known as "innocent" murmurs. When the murmur is related to heart disease, the treatment depends upon the cause of the murmur ranging from observation to medications to catheter or surgical therapy. ...Read more

How serious is a heart murmur?

Depends: Most heart murmurs are benign. Functional murmurs are those that relate to turbulent flow through normal valves. Anyone of us can have a murmur.

Some murmurs are related to mild or moderate leaking across valves and do not need any immediate attention. However, other murmurs are more serious and related to serious narorwing or leaking of valves. Some relate to holes in heart such as vsd's. ...Read more

Likely normal: Having a heart murmur means that when the heart beats, there is enough energy in the blood flow that some of the energy is transformed into sound. In a six year old, most likely this is a normal murmur and not a murmur caused by a heart problem. An experienced listener can hear differences in the sound that predict whether the murmur is normal. Children typically have normal murmurs. ...Read more

Yes: Unless you're dying with end-stage congestive heart failure (hopefully not), the murmur is not an issue. What is a heart murmur?

Unexpected noise: When you listen to the heart, the traditional lub-dup of the valves closing is what you expect to hear. When you hear an extra whooshing or vibratory sound it is usually of low intensity, so the "murmur" label is used. It can be murmur "good", or just part of the dynamic flow of blood. If it is murmur "bad", it represents a defect requiring special attention and care. ...Read more
