I've been taking advicor for five years and now my doctor is switching me to zocor (simvastatin). How long does the niacin stay in your body.. Flushing?

Good question: I researched your question: the half life of extended release Niacin in Advicor (lovastatin and niacin) is very variable, & depends on gender, dose, & individual characteristics. It peaks 5 hours after a single dose. Following years of treatment, it's probably safe to assume that it will take days (3-5) to wear off completely. Possibly longer depending on dose. ...Read more

How is applied medicine different from academia? Would it ever be a bad idea to ask for health advice from say a biomedical researcher(phd)?

Yes: Mds and dos are trained in clinical medicine with basic science background. Phds are trained in basic science and clinical research, not the practice of medicine. There is a long educational process and art to clinical medicine. They study the same disease processes but work on different aspects. Phds work on the science and theory. Mds/dos work on using this knowledge to treat people. ...Read more

Why's most fitness and health advice on the internet and in the media pitched toward women?

Why's most fitness and health advice on the internet and in the media pitched toward women?

Ask the experts: Traditionally, women have been more interested in their health than men. Men, as a group (not all men), tend to wait until something goes wrong before seeing their doctor. Why don't you ask the people who write content for health web sites why they write more for women than men? And let them know you'd like to read health information that's addressed to your needs as a man. ...Read more

What do you advise if i was just diagnosed with an aggressive breast cancer seeking alternative health advice?

Don't delay: Dear yulia, alternative med is great for some things, but for cancer western (traditional) medicine is the way to go. Please don't delay your treatment. Since I have been diagnosed with prehypertension a few months ago on atenolol. I have heart and overall health anxiety. Any advice.

Stay active: I have to tell you, Atenolol is a not first choice drug for high blood pressure unless there's a specific reason for picking it (heart disease, palpitations). Besides taking meds, I recommend maintaining a low salt, low cholesterol diet and regular exercise. If possible, avoid taking NSAIDS on a regular as they will elevate your BP and cause a variety of other health issues. ...Read more
