Hdl (Overview)

HDL, or high density lipoprotein, is a molecule in the body that is responsible for the transport of lipids (fats) from various organs including blood vessels back to the liver for processing and possible elimination. Because it helps prevent accumulation of lipids in blood vessels, HDL cholesterol is known as "good" cholesterol.

What is hdl?

Cholesterol Janitor!: Hdl stands for high density lipoprotein, aka. The "good cholesterol." it runs around, sweeps up cholesterol, and delivers it to the liver. Having low HDL is linked with having more heart attacks. We don't know yet if increasing your HDL will decrease your risk for heart attacks and strokes. *but* we do know that exercise is good for you, so keep on moving at least 30-60 minutes every day. ...Read more

How can someone raise hdl?

How can someone raise hdl?

Diet & exercise: Moderate exercise (about 30 minutes five times a week) reduces LDL cholesterol and raises HDL cholesterol. Smoking can lower HDL levels, so stop smoking if you do. Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean sources of protein. Include monounsaturated fats in your diet- olive oil/canola oil. Moderate consumption of alcohol may also positively impact HDL levels. 1 glass of wine a day. ...Read more

Can you tell me how I could rise my HDL level significantly?

Lifestyle measures.: The best way to raise cardioprotective HDL is cardiovascular exercise. Shoot for forty or forty-five minutes daily. Supplementation with no-flush Niacin may help as well, 2000 to 3000mg daily in divided doses. Fish oil supplements may help this as well, as healthy fats can raise the HDL. ...Read more

What does my blood work mean? Hdl 35, LDL 110, nhdl 119 & ANC 8405?

Depends on Particles: Cardiovascular (cvd) risk is related to the number of LDL and HDL particles (ldl-p, hdl-p). Ldl can be estimated by cholesterol (ldl-c) or measured by particle number (ldl-p). Ldl-c and ldl-p do not equally predict cardiovascular risk. When ldl-c and ldl-p values disagree (due to cholesterol variability per particle) cvd risk tracks with LDL particle number, not ldl-c values. ...Read more

I'm 65 & have a cholesterol 164 cholesterol count & 3:1 hdl/ldl ration. How might I benefit having a high-sensitivity CRP test?

Overall CVD risk: Your hdl/ldl ratio 3:1? Not reverse? That is highly unusual especially if you are not already on medications like a statin. It would be helpful to know your actual LDL and hdl. In any case, if you are at increased cvd risk for any reason, checking hs-crp may help you in deciding whether starting or upping your lipid management. If more than 2.0, you may be at increased risk for cvd. ...Read more

Rotoscoliosis: You may have rotoscoliosis -- an abnormal bend in your backbone causing chest and truncal stress and strain and pain -- if this is so, you need to do the best you can but you would need to take Ibuprofen for pain as needed -- exercise and keeping your weight down will help. ...Read more

Why does fasting produce accurate results on hdl, LDL & triglycerides? Triglycerides were 220 after lunch while HDL & LDL were good. Should I worry?

Why does fasting produce accurate results on hdl, LDL & triglycerides? Triglycerides were 220 after lunch while HDL & LDL were good. Should I worry?

Technique; no: Fasting state affects triglycerides. In other words, to accurately check your triglycerides, you need to be fasting. After you eat, your triglycerides will increase relative to when you're fasting. So a high triglyceride level when not fasting needs to be repeated while fasting. Only if it's elevated while fasting do you need to worry. ...Read more

If my total cholest is 284 with HDL 100.9 and LDL 177, trig 79, ratio 2.81. What is more important the levels or the ratio? What the ratio means?

Individual Values: Cardiovascular (cvd) risk is related to the number of LDL particles (ldl-p) and the number of HDL particles (hdl-p). When ldl-p is high or hdl-p is low cvd risk is elevated. Ratios report an LDL number divided by hdl. However, cvd risk can vary by 40% a the same ratio value. This is because you can get the same ratio with different LDL or HDL values (e.g., 2000/50 or 1000/25 give the same ratio). ...Read more

Am 24, Been feeling some kind of tightness in the left part of my chest for months now. ECG is normal, HDL 35mg/100ml, LDL 78, Tryglyccrides 34.?

Exercise: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, your tests are normal, except that HDL is at the low end of normal. The best way to increase HDL is to engage in exercise. Check with your doctor and start exercising with increasing vigor for at least 150 minutes/week. ...Read more
