I'm allergic to Erythromycin-anaphylaxis Clindamycin- anaphylaxis Bactrim- rash Sulfa drugs- rash can I use polymyxin b sulfate eye drops?

I'm allergic to Erythromycin-anaphylaxis
Clindamycin- anaphylaxis
Bactrim- rash
Sulfa drugs- rash can I use polymyxin b sulfate eye drops?

Yes: Polymyxin is an effective anti-bacterial. You could use it without the allergies popping up as it has with others. However: are you sure you need this drop? It seems as if you are using an antibiotic for every eye inflammation, most of which are probably not bacterial. And in so doing you have sensitized yourself to antibiotics that you might need for an actual infection. ...Read more

Is polymyxin b sulfate and trimethoprim ophthalmic solution USP used for styes?

Not usually: Antibiotics are generally ineffective for treatment of stye or chalazion, which are caused by blockage of oil ducts, not by infection. The best treatment for stye is warm compresses and lid scrubs with baby shampoo to unblock the oil gland and allow it to drain. ...Read more

Is polytrim eye drops ok for someone allergic to bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) sulfa?

Depends: If you have a well documented history of an anaphylactic reaction to Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) and sulfa in the past (you could not breath and had to go to the er), it is better to choose a different eye drop as you can get a similar allergy with polytrim. In my experience, prior history of "allergy" may not be a true allergy. But tell the md who treated you to be on the same side. ...Read more

Does polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) contain sulfa?

Does polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) contain sulfa?

Sulfates not sulfa: Polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) contains sulfates. A patient history of allergic reaction to sulfa drugs should not exclude polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) as a treatment. There seems to be no correlation between trimethoprim sulfate and sulfa sensitivity. However, one can be allergic to anything. Check with your treating doctor. ...Read more

Which one is better to prevent secondary infection, while recovering from HSV in the eye. Gentamicin Sulfate or Ciprofloxacin HCL?

Either drop is good: Both Gentimycin and Cipro (ciprofloxacin)floxicin are pretty good antibiotics against the common bapathogens around the eye that cause secondary infections. Gentimycin is a little more toxic to the cornea than the Cipro (ciprofloxacin) but probably has fewer resistant bacteria because we dont use it much anymore. I still use gentimycin after all routine cataract surgeries and after 25 years and over 20,000 ops - no infections ...Read more
