When weightlifting is it possible to gain strength without gaining weight or mass? If so what change is occurring to the muscle when strengths gained?

Some types of apparatus used in pilates machine classes definitely offer resistance training, as well as stretching and flexibility. It would also depend on how high a resistance or how heavy a weight is used, as well as the number of times (repetitions) the exercise is repeated.
