Periosteal hematoma: This is the fancy name for a bruise of the bone itself, where blood accumulates between the bone and the tissue which lines the outside (the periosteum). Ice for 48 hours, followed by heat may help it resolve, and Ibuprofen after 24 hours will probably be more useful than hydrocodone (200-400 mg three to four times a day with food or milk). If it persists longer, you may have a hairline fracture. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I hit the bridge of my nose on a wooden chair very hard and woke up with a dark bruise. 6 weeks have passed and now there is a red spot. How do I fix?
If no pain, and: Profile of nose is normal for you, no nose bleeds or other symptoms give it a little longer to dissipate. A small abrasion or laceration after striking your nose could cause the same finding and the redness could be infection if tender or inflammation from healing process. ...Read more

Why is the pain from a dressing my doctor put on my shin getting severe and moving into my bone up from the wound? I had a severe crush injury to my left foot and shin.I have a laceration that needs a skin graft on my shin. The stitches have been out for w
You : You could be having a reaction to whatever was put on the wound yesterday, but the first thing i would be concerned about is it becoming infected. Infection would cause swelling, and in the presence of a compression dressing, this would certainly increase your pain on top of the usual pain from an infection. If your doctor has office hours today, i would recommend you go there and wait, because he really must see you today. If he has no hours, call his office and let them know you're going to the er, preferably at the same hospital he or she is doing surgery today, so he or she can pop down to the er between cases and have a look. Good luck. Hope this helped. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Dr wants a ddimer will the fact I have a fresh small bruise on knee a small bruise under fingernail and blood drawn yesterday effect it tomorrow?
Yes, it can: D-dimers are non specific. Small rises in their levels can occur with bruises, repeat blood draw attempt, etc- basicaly anything that can cause blood to accumulate and clot anywhere in the body can cause high d dimers. NORMAL levels of d-dimers practically exclude potentially lethal blood clots, such as DVT or pulmonary embolism. ...Read more
I have a large blood bubble sort of thing on the back of my head, I fell off a golf cart and it hurts but I don't know how to make it go down?
I am 24 and generally a healthy person. I fell down a flight of stairs on my butt and have a huge bruise on my butt. Can I get a blood clot ?
Not likely: The huge bruise is blood under the skin - in the soft tissue of the buttocks. Pockets of blood (hematoma) can also form under the skin. The kind of clots most people are concerned about are the ones that can go to the lungs. This is a deep venous thrombosis (dvt). Unless your fall has made you immobile or you have leg swelling on one side, then DVT is unlikely. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

You : You should see a doctor. While it sounds like you might have a bursal swelling/bleeding you should have an evaluation that includes a good exam and x-rays to properly evaluate the bone and joints of the elbow as well as so-called soft tissue i.E ligaments, tendons, and nerves and especially ulnar nerve. Elbow injuries even without fracture or dislocation can quickly lead to stiffness. Also though from your description it's unlikely you want to make sure you don't develop any kind of infection from the cut that might possibly communicate with the joint. Best of luck. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

The edge of a chair fell on my leg 4mo. ago. It didnt bruise or hurt the next day but left knot. Now it hurts. blood clot? had neg d-dimer.
D -dimer: The knot may be an organized blood clot under the skin which is not serious but can be a tender lump. A negative d -dimer test doesn't rule out phlebitis however. If there is calf pain, tenderness and swelling, have an evaluation by a physician and, if advisable, a leg ultrasound will be ordered. A tender subcutaneous hematoma can be removed with a small incision. ...Read more
I fell in February of this year and got a really big bruise on my upper thigh. I can still see it slightly on my leg. I'm flying to the US in October. Do I need to worry about the bruise and blood clots with such a long flight?
No : The bruise itself would be unrelated to the development of a deep vein thrombosis. Taking a long flight can be a risk factor for getting a clot. I would not worry about it, I would just make sure you get up or at least do foot pumps every 30 minutes and consider taking an aspirin twice a day if there is no medical contraindication. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Non occlusive blood clot left leg. Got in shower, slipped on shower mat, hit left shin against shower rail. Bruise and and slight bump. Dislodge possib?
Possible: Clots below the knee only usually do not cause symptoms or significant problem even if they dislodge as they are too small to cause . Some experts do not even recommend blood thinners for this kind of clots as they often dissolve on their own. You should continue full activity as normal as this hastens improvement. If you have a lot of symptoms then short course of blood thinner is seasonable.. ...Read more
Fell a week ago and injured front of leg, had xray saw doctor. Still very swollen and hard, noticed more bruising. Blood clot?
Probably not: The bruising that you see is from blood accumulating in the soft tissues. It may get hard as it organizes, it may turn purple yellow or blue and "spread" to the adjacent areas. If you are developing swelling and pain in the back of the calf which was not present previously this could represent a clot in the vein and should be investigated with an ultrasound exam. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Can the blood clot behind my knee dislodge if i hit my shin against shower rail? Slight bruise sz of quarter with with a slight bump. On xarelto 20 mg
Very unlikely: The injury described would be quite unlikely to cause the clot you have to dislodge. The swelling at the site is due to local bleeding from the injury and being on a blood thinner. Elevate the leg, cool compresses to the injury and watch for increased swelling in your calf and lower leg. ...Read more

What would treatment be for a 94 year old women with dementia, who has been diagnosed with blood clot in her leg?
Anticoagulation?: The real ethical question is the extent of therapeutic intervention in the face of dementia. If the cognitive issues are severe, one might wonder about hospice care, but if mild, I would not withhold anticoagulants and TED stockings to prevent potential pulmonary embolism. ...Read more
After a majority removal of full leg blood clot with rapid lysis treatment how long will it take for swelling to go away or see major improvement?
Depends on clot type: It depends on whether the blood clot was in an artery or vein; since you describe swelling, seems likely it was a vein. Unfortunately, many times the vein can be damaged to the point that the valves in the vein do not function normally, and do not keep blood from falling to the feet. Make sure to see a good vein specialist during recovery, and follow their instructions. Good luck! ...Read more

Compression bruise: Makes sense this was a direct result of leaning hard against the ladder.
