What causes eye floaters?

What causes eye floaters?

The Vitreous: The vitreous is composed of a clear liquid called hyaluronic acid and fibers called collagen. As we age the vitreous becomes less solid and the collagen fibers become more visible (synuresis). The spots you see are these collagen fiber clumps. They do not cause harm to the eye, they just get in the way. If they are very prominent and reduce visual function they can be removed with a vitrectomy. ...Read more

What does it mean to have eye floaters and small lightning streak that lasts for 2 seconds?

See an eye doc: You should see a doctor who will dilate your eyes for examination of the retina. Sometimes, sudden floaters may accompany or precede the development of a tear in the retina. A retinal tear can rapidly progress to a retinal detachment. The lightning streak occurs with traction or pulling on the retina. See a retinal specialist. Avoid retinal detachment. ...Read more

Easily: Since there is no actual treatment for floaters, then naturopathic remedies, offering no treatment anyway, can be used with no risk. If you have had the sudden onset of floaters you need your eyes evaluated by an ophthalmologist who can rule out any serious problem and discuss the prognosis of the floaters with you. ...Read more

Not likely: Eye floaters r little pieces of solidified fluid that the eye globe is filled with (vitreous fluid). When they form, they float around and you will only be aware of them when they float in front of that part of the retina (optic nerve) that is the focus of light that allows us to see. They generally don't go away, and once u know what they are, may not be too bothersome. C eye doc annually. ...Read more

Is there any research going on anywhere for treatment of eye floaters?

Floaters research no: I am a vitreoretinal surgeon and am not aware of any major research on floaters. The options to treat floaters in young patients are limited. Older patients may be candidates for vitrectomy surgery depending on severity of floaters. Most doctors advise waiting to see if they improve on their own. They are not harmful. Discuss options with your eye doctor. ...Read more

What are some treatments for eye floaters/spots?

What are some treatments for eye floaters/spots?

"Serious" floaters.: Vitrectomy works for bad floaters. It carries risks like cataract, but may have reasonably good outcomes. Most floaters are not serious enough to warrant a vitrectomy. Of the floaters that are truly serious, most are associated with some other disease process like diabetes. Yag laser lysis is the other way. It is less invasive, but less effective also. Don't forget dilated exam first! ...Read more

Does anyone know how to reduce or get rid of eye floaters?

Does anyone know how to reduce or get rid of eye floaters?

Time: Floaters occur when the vitreous gel that fills the eye pulls away from the back part of the eye. The floaters diminish with time. If you have flashes of light or a change in your vision go to an eye md immediately as this could be a retinal tear or detachment-a potentially blinding condition. If your floaters persist or become worse this could be a sign of bleeding or inflammation-go to an md! ...Read more

Is there anything I can get from the grocery store or drug store for my eye floaters until I can see a doctor?

Not really: Floaters are essentially membrane fragments and debris in the fluids in the back of the eye. Most are benign but they may be the first sign of a retinal detachment. If you have them and also light flashes or diminution of vision you need an ophthalmologist to see you right away. There are no retail items that are helpful for floaters. ...Read more
