Athletic heart syndrome i thought that enlargement of the heart is very bad, is it no?

Athletic heart syndrome i thought that enlargement of the heart is very bad, is it no?

In general yes, but: Sometimes, cardiac enlargement can reflect heart failure. In other cases, cardiomyopathy may develop, where the chambers may enlarge because of illness of the heart muscle. However, some trained athletes have enlarged hearts from prolonged training without any evidence of dysfunction or arrhythmia risk. This has been termed "athletic heart"--but telling the difference can sometimes be difficult. ...Read more

Hospitalist said need cath: AV block, biatrial enlargement& cardiac insufficiency. Heart Dr. won’t cath due to my low BP. Should I get second opinion?

Poor cardiac output : It sounds like you are high risk for a cardiac cath. Anesthesia and the procedure alone can drop your blood pressure lower and cause you to have a heart attack, go into hypotensive shock, or acute renal failure. Once they have maximized you on medication and your blood pressure improves they can reassess the risk vs the benefit of performing the catherization. ...Read more

An xray result showing enlargement of the heart, what does it mean?is this a heart disease?my mom will undergo stress test anytime soon.

Enlargement reflects: heart weakness, whether from ?ed blood supply/infarction(s), valve problems, high blood pressure, etc. Yet enlargement on CXR may be due to technique, pericardial fat, fluid, etc. A well done heart echo (make sure you see, understand & keep a copy of the video images) typically vastly more accurate/helpful. Stress test miss all but advanced Ds. Optimize lipoproteins (not cholesterol), HbA1c, BP. ...Read more

Too much cholesterol and high uric acid in the blood can cause heart enlargement? my heart enlarged a liitle bit. im suffering from high blood.130/100

No: Uric acid is a marker for heart disease but does not cause heart disease. Elevated cholesterol at your age ( unless you have an inherited form with very high levels) is probably not the cause. See a cardiologist. At your age an inherited valve problem, viral infection, neurologic disease, or autoimmune disease are the likely cause. This can also be normal if you are athletic. ...Read more

Left atrium enlargement with 1 st degree heart block is there any cause for concern?

LA enlargement : La enlargement is likely due to one of several causes including high blood pressure, valve disease or other structural heart problems. This could be related to the first degree heart block since if the atria is big then it may take longer to conduct from the atria to the ventricle. The best way to evaluate la or left atrial size is by an ultrasound or echocardiogram of the heart. ...Read more

Whats the difference between right ventricular enlargement, cardiomyopathy and right sided heart failure? What is worse?

Whats the difference between right ventricular enlargement, cardiomyopathy and right sided heart failure? What is worse?

Hello again!: RV enlargement can be a SIGN of something wrong with the RV (weakness, pressure or volume overload). Cardiomyopathy means muscle weakness: the ventricle fails to contracts with normal vigor. This can be due to many things: the commonest are viral infection, alcohol, and genetics. If the RV can't handle the load, it may eventually fail resulting in"right sided heart failure". ...Read more

No. Need RVSP.: To diagnose pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), you need to have (1) a description of symptoms that you experience that is consistent with PAH, and (2) a measurement or estimate of the pulmonary arterial pressure - either by echocardiogram or by Swan-Ganz (right heart) catheterization. Only after a doctor has obtained this information can you diagnose PAH. Use HealthTap Prime to discuss. ...Read more

If someone has AF and they are on:a)rhythm controlb) effective rate controlIn these cases would there still be heart damage or enlargement?

AF AND HEART DAMAGE: AF may result in weakness of the heart muscle- called tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy- if rate control is poor, and person is experiencing frequent or chronic elevations in their heart rate. AF that is controlled with medications is not likely to result in such occurence. More commonly, AF arises as a result of structural heart disease, such as having a leaky mitral valve, or changes due to BP. ...Read more
