Where can I fill my prescription with name brand elavil (amitriptyline) the generic has never worked as well?

Anywhere: You can do that at any pharmacy. Just ask them for the name brand and, if the doctor didn't specifically write the brand name, they will verify with him/her. Be aware that depending on your insurance coverage, you may have to pay a higher price. ...Read more

Why did my doctor prescribe me elavil (amitriptyline) for fibromyalgia when I said I didn't want more medication and I just asked for a referral to a chiropractor?

Why did my doctor prescribe me elavil (amitriptyline) for fibromyalgia when I said I didn't want more medication and I just asked for a referral to a chiropractor?

Not a bad choice: I don't know why your doctor prescribed medication when you told him you wanted a referral to a chiropractor. Mds and chiropractors operate from differing world views, so it is not often you'll find an md willing to refer to a chiropractor. There is no evidence greater than anecdotal report that chiropractic will help your fibromyalgia. There is evidence that medication can help with the pain. ...Read more

Do not take elavil (amitriptyline): Elavil (amitriptyline) can have these side effects. It would be unusual to have such dramatic side effects if you were started on a low dose. However, after a reaction like this I would definitely not take it again. ...Read more

Will I get more pain relief from nerve pain if I use a combination of both drugs like elavil and Lyrica, (pregabalin) than if I used just one?

Will I get more pain relief from nerve pain if I use a combination of both drugs like elavil and Lyrica, (pregabalin) than if I used just one?

Most likely: Since they attack "nerve" pain by different mechanisms then there is a potential for additive benefit. They are often used in combination for that purpose.

Keep in mind that medications like this do not work right away, so if you can tolerate as they "get into your system" over the course of a few weeks you will be able to see if they truly work for you. ...Read more

Do the drugs olanzapine, Zoloft (sertraline) and elavil work on the parasympathetic nervous system to calm you down?

Do the drugs olanzapine, Zoloft (sertraline) and elavil work on the parasympathetic nervous system to calm you down?

Elavil (amitriptyline): Has mostly anticholinergic side effects (dry mouth, constipation, elevated heart rate) just the opposite of parasympathetic. The calming effect is due to a much more complex interaction of excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters further up stream (cortex and deep gray matter structures like the thalamus, the hypopithalamus, putamen, globus pallidus, nucleus accumbens, ventral tegmental area.) ...Read more

Would taking 10mg a night of elavil (amitriptyline) cause rapid hr or dangerous heart rhythm, or is this more likely only at higher doses? Need it for migraine.

Taking anything else: If this is all that you are taking it is still possible but unlikely. However, if you are on other medications or over the counter medications even supplements or herbs or homeopathic items, then the risk increases. Best to discuss with whomever is prescribing the elavil (amitriptyline). If you are taking other things then an interaction profile can be done e.g.; epocratesonline is one and there are others. ...Read more

I wrote on here about elavil (amitriptyline) the docs said its toxic at higher doses and whatch for weight gain why is it toxic and I have gained a lot weight why?

Many medications: Have recommended doses. Taking more than that dose could be an overdose. Taking less than that dose could be ineffective. Some people gain weight with Effexor (venlafaxine) and some people lose weight. Some have no significant change in their weight. Research suggests that weight gain appears to be dose related. ...Read more

How long should I wait after stopping sam-e before I take Elavil (amitriptyline)?

I've asked a lot: Of MD's this question. Some start you off on the new med right after stopping the old one. Some wait as much as two weeks. You are mixing an herb with a Tricyclic, so I'd play it safe and wait awhile. As a psychiatrist who knows about herbs. Most don't. ...Read more

Just prescribed elavil (amitriptyline) for IBS and cronic ruq nerve pain. It is to strong even at lowest dose. Can I cut it in half? Only been taking 3 days at bed.

Elavil (amitriptyline): Please call your doctor about your difficulties with elavil, since you haven't shared how much you're taking. The lowest dose made is 10mg, and I don't know any that are scored (making them easier to cut in half) anyway. You may end up with a crumbled pill. Your doctor will want to understand what you mean by "too strong, " so s/he can adjust or change. Another option might be low-dose sinequan (doxepin). ...Read more
