Does Xanax Work For Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms
Not a good idea: While Xanax (alprazolam) could help with some symptoms, it is never used this way in a medical setting. Xanax (alprazolam) is short acting and one of the most addictive benzodiazipines. It itself has the highest risk of seizures if withdrawaling from it. Since not doctor who is familar with treating alcohol withdrawal would use it, i suspect you are trying to withdrawal yourself. Alprazolam is a short acting benzodiazepine, it does not last long in the system . So when used regularly with multiple doses to treat anxiety, it is associated with inter-dose withdrawal, tolerance and a resulting increase level of baseline anxiety. So in anxiety clinics, we use it only in cases of " flight , dentist or other infrequent anxieties, ...Read more
Not really: Oxazepam is and benzodiazepine and works on gaba receptors. Marijuana has its own receptors. On the other hand, marijuana withdrawal, if such exists, might present with anxiety and Oxazepam will help for that. If you say you're withdrawing from marijuana, where you depressed to begin with? ...Read more
Five days: Mostly, all withdrawal symptoms are over in 3-5 days. For those with severe alcohol dependency, withdrawal symptoms can consist of seizures and hallucinations. These are medical emergencies. A person could die, especially if elderly or debilitated with a chronic disease. What many folks do is to start drinking when the withdrawal becomes too uncomfortable, which only just repeats the cycle. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Not recommended: The best thing is to seek help for alcohol withdrawal, which can be dangerous. Check with your doctor and get her/his recommendations for withdrawal treatment. Xanax (alprazolam) doesn't last as long in the body as valium or librium, and there could be a risk of seizures if it wears off and the alcohol withdrawal breaks through. Don't try this at home! ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers
Not likely: If you are having alcohol withdrawal, see your physician. GABA supplements, like others in the US, are unregulated and you have no real idea of what's in them, secondly they are not well absorbed by mouth (only sublingual forms actually get in) and thirdly there is no proof of their effectiveness. Seizures and DTs can occur if you are not properly treated. Then, get help with your alcoholism. ...Read more
Define "help": Opiate withdrawal's tough & can be dangerous if not supervised. You'll have to be more specific on the word "help?" It can attenuate symptoms but is no guarantee or panacea and must be used along with other measures. A novel agent that deserves attention is NAD+ I've seen remarkable results with NAD infusions compared to virtually anything else. Google it. Questions? www.healthtap.com/dr-saghafi ...Read more
Water and Minerals: It's very important to hydrate as much as possible. Also, certain vitamins and minerals - such as thiamine, folic acid, B12, vitamin C, magnesium, and potassium can help your liver metabolize the alcohol and detox. Magnesium can often help with anxiety as well. At our office I'd give you a nutrient IV, but you could take oral supplements as well. ...Read more
Can withdrawal from ssri, benzodiazepine, and antipsychotic create insomnia for over four weeks? Does medication make a condition worse than ever befo
Yes: Sleep can be a fragile venture, so withdrawal from these potent psychoactive agents can certainly disrupt it. Someone thought you needed to be on these meds, so the underlying condition could also be contributing to your insomnia. Ssri withdrawal is very uncomfortable, but temporary (so it might feel worse than your original condition). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Starting doxycycline tomorrow for UTI. Take prozac (fluoxetine) and valium. Also smoke marijuana. Can these interact with doxy? What about alcohol?
What your Dr prescr: Prescribes. The decision regarding the dose of any medication like this is extremely personalized. People have tolerances to this class of medication all across the board. As physicians we try to provide just enough to treat the symptoms while adding in an antidepressant that has been antianxiety effect as well as psychotherapy. We try to keep the dose as little as possible and the treatment as short as possible with the realization that there are people who require extremely low dose short-term treatment and others who require the opposite.Severity of the anxiety interestingly does not always predict dose response. Some people with high anxiety get by on low doses and some people with relatively low anxiety require higher doses. This is why the practice of psychopharmacology is so individualized. ...Read more
I take ativan (lorazepam) for an anxiety disorder. I've heard it helps with some opiate withdrawal symptoms. How much should I take to relieve the symptoms?
Need to ask your Dr.: HealthTap is not used for treatment of individual patients, and something like the treatment of an addiction needs to be done through a one on one evaluation with a health care provider who you develop a relationship with. The continuity of care as well as an individual treatment plan will be developed personally for your withdraw symptoms in a well coordinated medical plan. Can taking .5 mg of Xanax (alprazolam) a day for 2 weeks and suddenly stopping cause mild withdrawl symptoms like insomnia and anxiety?
Or worse!Talk to Dr!: The withdrawal symptoms from xanax (alprazolam) can be life-threatening, so perhaps you are fortunate. It is never a good idea to stop psychotropic meds without mediucal guidance and doctors will almost never stop these drugs abruptly. If things get worse, get to a urgent care or an er quickly. If they don't - make an appointment w/ the prescribing dr to quit carefully. Best wishes. ...Read more
Can caffeine interact with diazepam? Prescribed 5mg diazepam prn for anxiety. Feeling nauseous after 2cups of coffee.Have caffeine sensitivity. Thanks
Diazepam is a: sedative and caffeine is a stimulant. If any thing, they might cancel each other out. However, equal parts uppers and downers don't necessary make you feel good. If you get nauseous after 2 cups of coffee, why not stop at one? or 1 1/2? Or half decaf, half regular? Or tea (which has a lower concentration of caffeine.)? Hope this helps. Dr. Anne ...Read more
Will Xanax (alprazolam) help with morphine withdraw symptoms? I've read that benzos can help. I have script for xanax (alprazolam). Could i take 1/day?
Yes it can.: Benzodiazepines such as xanax (alprazolam) can help curb symptoms of opiate withdrawal. It is not wise to take them regularly, as then you will be replacing the opiate with the xanax (alprazolam). They can be very addicting as well. Be careful when you take them and try to spread them out infrequently if at all possible. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is it ok to start naltrexone and ativan during detox from alcohol while already taking Effexor (venlafaxine) for depression?
No: I would not recommend using an potentially addictive drug to ease a side effect of withdrawal from another drug. Not sure if you are working with your doc on tapering schedule or not, if you are may need to slow it down. Discuss with doctor, there may be other options. For some of my patients i've had success putting on Prozac to wean off paxil, (paroxetine) then wean off prozac. It's longer half life helps. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
