Smoker I've been coughing up phlegm tinged with blood at times I had a CT scan it states that their is cystic changes and a parenchymal density lung?

Parenchymal density: Is a very nonspecific term, unfortunately. It could mean anything from scar to mass to pneumonia to collapse of a small lung segment. Without the images to review, it is difficult to determine. Likewise, there are both acute and chronic causes of cystic changes. The nonspecific report verbiage needs to be interpreted in conjunction with the images themselves and your clinical picture. ...Read more

Please advise if it's normal to cough up staples from lung surgery 3 yrs later?

Not normal: While this may not represent a major problem, it would not be considered "normal". A follow up with the thoracic surgeon would be advised. Surgical staples used to remove part of a lung could migrate and be coughed up, but evaluation by the surgeon would be best to make sure this doesn't represent a more serious problem. ...Read more

My husband would be sleeping and all of a sudden coughing up so bad it leads to vomiting what could be wrong? He did have lung surgery b4 I met him

Proper evaluation: It is difficult from this account to make a diagnosis. He could have sleep apnea and he wakes up gagging to a point of vomiting, or he could have off and on aspirations which could be corrected with proper positioning. I don't know the surgery he had either so I can't make a recommendation to that effect. Have proper evaluation or even maybe a sleep study to find out. ...Read more

Fluid on lungs after gb surgery. Has dementia and cannot walk around much or cough up phlegm. What is the treatment and outlook? Still in hospital.

Fluid around lungs: After gb surgery is not common. If the gallbladder was very infected it may be reactive fluid. Other causes, such as pneumonia, should be considered. If it is infection then appropriate antibiotics should be started. If there is a lot of fluid restricting breathing then a tube may be placed to remove the fluid. As long as oxygen levels are good and infection controlled it should get better. ...Read more

Deoxygenated blood enters the lungs from the right side of the heart and travels to the lungs. When you inspire, oxygen flows into the lungs, transverses the capilliares and attaches to hemoglobin down a gradient. At the same time, co2 diffuses into the capilaries and is expelled with exhalation. Oxygen rich blood then flows to the left side of the heart and into the ...Read more
