Can Albuterol Be Used For Clearing Nasal Congestion Related To The Common Cold
Ventolin is the trade name for the chemical / drug albuterol. This drug is a medicine to be inhaled to open the airways and it acts quickly, so it is called a "short-acting bronchodilator". The medicine comes in both a hand-held inhaler and as a liquid to be used with a nebulizer machine . It also comes in a liquid form to take by mouth, but this should not be used ...Read more
What causes chronic nasal congestion which responds to afrin but not astelin, flonase, or sinus rinses? Can surgery even work in a case like this?
Afrin (oxymetazoline) rebound: Afrin (oxymetazoline) causes severe narrowing of the blood vessels in the nose and thus the effect on decongestion. However prolonged constriction leads to decrease blood supply to the tissue and may lead to permanent damages. The nose also becomes less responsive to afrin (oxymetazoline) with prolonged use . Flonase counteracts inflammation and Astelin is an antihistamine and neither constricts the blood vessels. ...Read more

Chronic nasal congestion due to rhinitis. Are saline nasal sprays effective in the long term? Congestion will come back if stopped? Thanks.
Lots of Options: OTC non-sedating antihistamines like Allegra, Claritin, (loratadine) or Zyrtec are helpful for perennial allergic rhinitis symptoms, however the gold-standard treatment are daily intranasal steroid sprays if your symptoms are more severe. Avoidance of triggers is important as well and allergy shots are also an option. Saline sprays are useful but will not provide lasting relief used alone. See Allergist. ...Read more
Can piriton help with non allergic rhinitis where the only symptoms is nasal inflammation and excess need for throat clearing ?
Usually not: But if it dose , then your problem is not non-allergic rhinitis. Nasal antihistamine (azelastine etc) may be helpful. I suspect that you do have an allergic rhinitis given the presence of asthma. Perhaps you need another consultation especially if the non-allergic rhinitis was made based on blood test alone. ...Read more

Can nebulizing only with Seline be helpful in releasing congestion due to upper respitory infection in a 4 yrs old?
Depends on the cause: If your symptoms are from an infection, you may need an antibiotic. However, many of these are due to a virus and won't improve with antibiotics. If you have only had symptoms for a couple of days i would wait to see if it resolves on its own. If it has been there closer to a week, see your doctor and consider an antiobiotic. Allergies would best be treated with nasal steroids such as flonase. ...Read more
