Child hit side of his head 2 weeks ago. Now has goose egg on forehead and bruising on side of head and behind ear have just appeared. Serious?
"Goose-egg": This is a bruise- called a "goose-egg" on the head. Because there is not much room between the scalp and the skull, any swelling pushes outward, instead of inside the tissue as a bruise would do. Put an ice pack on to decrease the swelling and pain. Head injury: If no loss of conciousness, laceration of the scalp and normally oriented after being consoled , there is no special treatment needed. He can be allowed to eat and nap normally. If he naps longer than normal, awaken him gently and observe for normal interaction.
