It depends: This depends on the particular antidepressant, as there are many choices. Also it depends on the person taking the medicine, because each may experience these effects differently. I am at week 23, is it better to use antidepressant at the beginning of pregnancy or at the end?

No Standard Exists: Use of antidepressants during pregnancy remains controversial. Recent studies suggest that left untreated, depression and anxiety can be harmful to both mother and fetus. The decision to treat or not to treat, the timing of the treatment, the dosing, and selection of medications is complex. The expecting parents, the obstetrician, and the psychiatrist must all work as a team during pregnancy. ...Read more

How effective antidepressant switching usually be?

Good question: If the antidepressant isn't helping and it is at the highest dose possible, either based on safety of the medication or side effects that the patient is experiencing, then it is a good idea to either add another medication or switch medications. Adding psychotherapy is also helpful. The effectiveness of switching medications depends on many factors, like how many times have medications been tried. ...Read more

How dangerous is it to drink alcohol while taking any antidepressant medication?

How dangerous is it to drink alcohol while taking any antidepressant medication?

Depends.: Excessive alcohol use can damage your liver so that it is not able to metabolize antidepressants causing them to accumulate in the blood stream and not be excreted at the usual rate - so side effects could be more pronounced. Alcohol acts as a depressant so it will directly interfere with any benefits of taking an antidepressant. In large amounts both substances can kill you -- don't do it! ...Read more

My therapist diagnosed me with dysthymia. I don't like the idea/side effects of antidepressant medications. Any natural ways to help with dysthymia?

Agree w Dr. Front: At the heart of dysthymia are distorted thoughts about one's self and one's world. The best way to confront distortion thoughts is with reality. Thus, I strongly encourage cognitive behavioral therapy. Talk about feelings ; address problems. Don't avoid them. Aim for 7.5 - 8 hours of sleep/ night. Daily physical activity is optimal in a green space. Eat healthfully. Cut out junk carbs, caffeine ;. ...Read more

Could weed in ur system affect antidepressant meds?

Could weed in ur system affect antidepressant meds?

Not a good combo: Some constituents in marijuana can cause anxiety and psychosis; some depressed patients also have these effects. For this reason I would not recommend anyone with a mood disorder be smoking marijuana. Also it has CNS depressant effects that could be accentuated when combined with antidepressants. Rather than the antidepressants working as they should, the thc could adversely alter the effect. ...Read more

Severe dizzy fatigue. Bad insomnia for months. Antidepressant not work. What to do? Effecting badly my life. Normal blood tests heart. Which specialist

Psychiatry: I would start with psychiatry to deterimine if your insomnia is related to depression / anxiety or if there is another diagnosis. The psychiatrist would also be able to adjust and change your medications to treat the mood disorder and facilitate sleep. Poor sleep will always make mood problems worse. I would also try taking melatonin 5 mg a night for 2 weeks to see if that helps. ...Read more

I am using Prozac (fluoxetine) 20 mg daily for anxiety. Is it safe to take gingko biloba supplements with prozac (fluoxetine). I read that this herb might interact with antidepressants.?

I am using Prozac (fluoxetine) 20 mg daily for anxiety. Is it safe to take gingko biloba supplements with prozac (fluoxetine). I read that this herb might interact with antidepressants.?

Possible interaction: Gingko and Prozac (fluoxetine) are both metabolized by the same liver enzyme system, so can compete for use of this. Also gingko can slightly inhibit this enzyme system, possibly slowing prozac's metabolism. There is also anecdotal evidence that gingko + Prozac (fluoxetine) in depressed patients can lead to hypomania -- but we don't know whether gingko alone can do this (without the prozac). ...Read more
