Intervals: Interval training can increase your anaerobic threshold. Since intervals involve high intensity bursts with brief rests, they can challenge your anaerobic system and train it to adapt. Gradually increase the length of time of the high intensity portions over time, and you should see your anaerobic threshold increase. ...Read more

What does it mean to be anaerobic?

What does it mean to be anaerobic?

Doing without oxygen: In medicine, anaerobic usually means anaerobic exercise, such as in the 100-meter race at the olympics. In that sprint, the runners don't get enough oxygen to their leg muscles, so the muscles work in a low-oxygen state during the sprint and recover shortly afterwards. The other medical meaning is anaerobic bacteria or infections, which are nasty germs that grow in low or no-oxygen environments. ...Read more

I have just had a cpet test and got an anaerobic score of 11. Is this good and what does it mean many thanks.

Missing info: Better to explain your symptoms (usually shortness of breath) so we understand why the cardiopulmonary exercise test was done. The more important part of the test is the aerobic capacity or vo2max which normally is around 25-30 ml/kg/min at your age. Anaerobic threshold is usually around half of that. I dont know what yours score of 11 refers to so why not ask the doc who ordered it to explain. ...Read more

Can cardio workouts burn protein?

Can cardio workouts burn protein?

Not usually: Our body does not use protein for energy unless it is an emergency (starvation for example). The simple way to look at this is that it will first break carbs, then fat (to make carbs and break them). Once it used all the carbs and fat (which should only happen in starvation), it would use protein. ...Read more
