Bedtime: I try to narrow the thumb sucking to nap or bedtime. I tell the child it is okay to suck the thumb in bed. By focusing on one time per day, the child feels there is still hope of not getting in trouble for the habit. Eventually, the nighttime habit will lessen too. Adult thumb sucking: It is not homosexual. If it happens while he is asleep then there is nothing he can do about it. It probably reflects some of the same needs as you find in childhood thumb-sucking -- a way to calm yourself or feel emotionally more secure. Find substitute : Seems like you've been going through a lot being only 17 your use of your thumb as a coping mechanism stems from child hood habit of using it to comfort you. Also you may start by setting expectations on where she is allowed to do it, thus reducing the "thumb time", other options are having her look in a mirror when she does it, to see if she likes what she sees.
