Pregnancy (Definition)

When your due date arrives, you will be more than ready to have your baby! Most women deliver the baby somewhere between 37 and 42 weeks. Approximately 7% of babies are not delivered by 42 weeks, and when that happens, it is referred to ...Read more

9 weeks pregnant (28 yo and 1st pregnancy) and in the past few days cervix has become very low maybe 1" from vaginal opening. Normal? Concern?

Prolapse cervix: Yes some concern especially since this is your first pregnancy and I am assuming you have not had any surgeries on or through your cervix. So would advice you see your obstetrician whom might consider evaluating you both clinically and by sonography to query structural integrity of cervix, length of cervix and premature opening of cervix. Need eval for prolapse & cervical incompetence. ...Read more

Sex: As long as your doctor agrees and you have not broke your water regular sex or gentle exercise or walking can increase chances to active labor. If your Obstetrician feels the need to stimulate labor medicines can be used. See your doctor as soon as you can. ...Read more

I'm 34 weeks & 3 days pregnant and my cervix is shortened between 1.88cm to 1.98 cm. baby's head down. How possible is preterm labor?

Two weeks before delivered loose mucus plug then contractions, bleeding and fully dilated at 25 weeks pregnant is these a weak cervix symptoms?

Preterm labor.: The symptoms you describe do not support a diagnosis of incompetent cervix, rather a typical preterm labor and delivery. You should get early prenatal care with all future pregnancies, consume Folic Acid 1-5 mg daily for the rest of your reproductive life and receive intramuscular weekly 17-hydroxy Progesterone caproate after 16 weeks to prevent recurrence. ...Read more

39 weeks pregnant and 3 cm dilated with my 4th, how much longer till he's ready?

39 weeks pregnant and 3 cm dilated with my 4th, how much longer till he's ready?

Soon, very soon...: Your baby is probably "ready" and your cervix seems to be also but not the contractile muscles of your uterus. Science has not found a reliable way to predict the onset of labor yet in nullipara nor in multiparous women like you. Discuss "nipple stimulation" and "stripping of the membranes" with your obstetrical team or remain patient and hopeful. ...Read more

Debilitating pain with pressure behind cervix to push like in labor, not pregnant. I am 32 & had 2 vaginal births 9 &7 years ago. Large clots.?

Ultrasound may help: There are many things that could contribute to your complaints. One is a fibroid that is within the uterus, either applying pressure on the cervix or even trying to deliver through it. A pelvic uktrasound and eval by your gyn would go a long way toward finding the answer. ...Read more

I have a balanced translocation of chromsome 1 and 9 with break @ 1q12 and 9 q12 i had one m/c at 5 weeks im now 6 weeks preg, could this baby be healthy?

Yes but: There are several possible outcomes with the fetus with your set up. If your normal chromosomes 1& 9 or the balanced 1& 9 are in the egg, you fetus can be normal but may carry the trans-location. If a normal 1 is paired with the trans-located 9 or or normal 9 with abnormal 1, you will have a deletion set up.This fetus is likely to have significant problems if it survives pregnancy. ...Read more

33 wks pregnant irregular painless contractions, positive ffn test, 1 CM dilated, baby well into pelvis, 6th pregnancy, will i give birth early?

Hard to say: The fetal fibrobectin test is much more predictive of the real condition, or the truth, when the test is negative, than when it is positive. A single positive ffn test result is not highly predictive of preterm labor and delivery, and since you are probably not in active labor from irregular contractions, it's hard to answer your question with confidence. See your OB regularly as directed ...Read more

I am 9 weeks and 4 days pregnant with twins. Baby on top is 9 weeks and 4 days, baby on bottom is 9 weeks and 3 days. Are my twins going to be identic?

Can't say: This difference is not significant and I can't say whether or not they will be identical based on this. You will need to know more about the fetal membranes and the placenta to know . This will be described better with future ultrasounds in which they will look at the chorion and amnion.Good luck. ...Read more

What do doctors use to dilate the cervix when pregnant?

Cervix dilation: When a patient is in labor, the cervix dilates on its own. If not in labor, prostaglandins (such as cytotec) can be used to help the labor process to start when indicated. There are also mechanical means to start the dilatation, such as foley balloon or laminaria to slowly expand the cervical opening. ...Read more

Is it more likely for your cervix to thin and dilate quicker with 4 pregnancy ? First 3 all normal and successful

Good question: That's such a good question, and the answer is complicated. In my experience, women who had a lot of deliveries oftentimes the cervix will be the same for weeks on end and then will change suddenly. That is, labor when it comes causes rapid changes to the cervix. I'm like a woman's first delivery where the change is more methodical. ...Read more

I am pregnant from 39 weeks. How can I enlarge or dilate the cervix for an easier delivery?

I am pregnant from 39 weeks. How can I enlarge or dilate the cervix for an easier delivery?

Unproven techniques.: Some midwives recommend a large bouncing ball to achieve cervical ripening at term. Others do a vigorous cervical examination (stripping of the amniotic membranes) or offer nipple stimulation as an alternative. My approach to all those techniques is the same: unproven benefit and possible fetal risks do not justify using any of those options. Nature will take care of cervical ripening for you. ...Read more
