My 3 mo old sleeps in her carseat bc she can't lie flat due to a cleft palate. When put on her back in crib, won't sleep. How does this affect sids?
Car seat fine: A semi- upright posture in the car seat can lead to airway problems in some frail infants or those with posterior tongue position(robin anomaly). For most, this position avoids the increased sids risk of prone sleeping and may be the best choice for some with a cleft. When the kid has improved mobility and or the kid has recovered from a cleft repair, crib based sleeping may be more realistic. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My 6 month old sleeps 1-3 hours and wakes up crying. I have to hold her upright to sleep. We tried gas drops, gripe water, now chamomille tea. Now what?
Check her ears: "jack-in-the-box" syndrome is often seen in kids w/ ear infection or ear pain. After being down for 90min, they pop up screaming. Then ear pressure is reduced & they return to sleep only to repeat the cycle all night or w/each nap. Reflux is certainly also possible for the same reason. Pressure in the head and stomach build when lying flat. Check in with your pediatrician. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

My baby 2 months old from her birth she does not sleep at night, she wakes up to 7-8 hours at night before sleeping. How to change her sleep pattern
Breast or bottle?: During the day, rouse her gently after 2 1/2-3 hours. Engage her in gooing & cooing & putting her on her tummy to play. Have a consistent bedtime at night, read, rock & cuddle in low light. Wipe out her mouth after the last feed to establish the habit. Put her in her crib in her own room, on her back, drowsy but awake. She'll learn to self-calm to fall asleep & may sleep 6 hrs by 4-6 mos. ...Read more

My 4 month old sleeps in her car seat instead of her crib due to cleft palate complications. No blanket. Is she at risk for sids?
Equal: No more or less so than child without cleft. Recommend having your child evaluated by cleft palate team at the closest children's hospital. May be a bit of a trip, but worth it for the expertise and the team (pediatrician, pediatric dentist, orthodontist, speech therapist, plastic surgeon, oral surgeon, psychiatrist, nutritionist, etc) approach. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Tough situation: You've correctly identified the problem. Inform your neighbors, put baby is in crib for all naps and bedtime to be consistent. Put him down while drowsy, but awake; leave the room, for at least 5". If still fussy return, but don't pick up baby, sooth with your voice, gentle touch, leave in 1". Repeat. Don't start this until baby is feeling better. Good lick. ...Read more
My baby is 4 1/2 months. . She sleeps for 9 hours straight at night before she wakes up to feed. Normal? Or shall i wake her up?
My 6 months baby sleeps for 9 hours straight at night and wakes up with no wet diaper. . Is that ok? She feeds 5oz and goes back to sleep 3 more hours
Hard to say: Unless you use cloth, it is hard to say if they wet or not unless you weigh the diaper. Most available disposables are designed with material woven into the fabric that pulls away moisture. If concerned, a square of toilet tissue placed over the genitals will show evidence of a wet when checked. If the kid is otherwise thriving, this is probably ok. ...Read more

Trying to get 5 month old use to crib. He falls sleep with little fussing on stomach but cries loudly on back. I know sids danger. What should I do?
Infant sleep: While placing babies on their backs for sleep has had a very beneficial effect on the incidence of sids, it doesn't work for every baby. All babies are different, have their own temperament and personality. Some will just refuse to lie on their backs. If you have an infant like this, just roll with his personality and let him sleep as nature dictates. The risk of sids is really quite low. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
My 10 week old screams before naps. No rocking, swaddling, etc calms her. She finally fell asleep on my chest. Is this Colic? I watch for sleep clues.
My daughter sleeps from 12 pm to 6 am then starts fussing in her bed so I pick her up, give her a bottle thru sleep, put her back in bed. Is that ok?
Confusing statement: If you let a baby lay in bed drinking on a bottle you increase the risk of ear infections & dental problems. If you feed her in your arms & she falls asleep eating she probably didn't need the full feed. Laying her down awake helps her learn to self settle without using the bottle as a crutch. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
He has tears..: ...When he breast feeds, and when he doesn't breast feed too. Every time he blinks, a tear washes across his eye. If he is actually crying when he is feeding then something is bothering him (maybe throat or ear pain) and you should get him checked out. If it is just eye tearing and he is otherwise well, it might be from a little nasal congestion , so don't worry about it too much. ...Read more
6 months baby sleeps for 6 hours then wakes up to feed and goes back to sleep. How can I make her sleep 9 hours straight?
Unlikely to happen: I'm surprised the kid will get 6 hours. Most will do up to 4 hours of deep sleep, alert and self settle for a few more and then get up for the day.No baby or adult sleeps continuously for 9 hours without cycling through shallow wake states. If you want her to wake at a different time, manipulate the start times to match your need. ...Read more
