Sonogram (Definition)

An ultraound, also known as a sonogram, is a painless and relatively inexpensive imaging test that utilizes sound waves instead of ionizing radiation. There are no side effects. Ultrasound can give us two-dimensional, and in some applications three-dimensional, images of structures and organs in virtually any part of the body. In addition to diagnostic uses, such as evaluating abnormalities in the abdomen, pelvis, and breast, ultrasounds are commonly used to guide needle and catheter placement in a variety of surgical ...Read more

diagnose w/ ectopic when no baby was seen on Transvaginal ultrasound @ 5 weeks & levels continue to double. Possible misdiagnosis?

Look harder: It could be intra-Abdominal. It could be what is called a mole. Ultrasound has a poor resolution. It may be so small that you don't see it but you must must continue looking. It is the test in medicine which is most operator defendant. Go to your local University Medical Center and have the most experienced ultrasonographer examine you. Not to be trifled with. I recently had a transvaginal ultrasound done & it said I'm 12 weeks & 5 days is it okay that the baby measures 11.3 cm? Is that too big or too small?

Fine: The ultrasound dating of a pregnancy is based on the fetal measurements so, if the ultrasound dating agrees with your dating based on your last menstrual period, the baby is just the right size. Remember, however, that babies gain most of their weight in the third trimester and that is when you see the greatest difference between large and small babies. Best wishes to you both. ...Read more

Exactly how many days off can a transvaginal ultrasound at 6 weeks 3 days be? I keep reading everything from two days to a full week so I'm very confused.

Depends: The error depends on which measurements are being used to date the pregnancy. If the gestational sac (the earliest sign of pregnancy on ultrasound) is all that is visible, the error can be up to a week. On the other hand, if the actual fetus can be measured (crown-rump length), the error is substantially less (approximately 3 days in the 7 week range). The error increases later in pregnancy. ...Read more

Can transvaginal ultrasound detect 4 weeks gestation?

Perhaps: Kyl: at that early stage we may see a decidual (pregnancy) reaction in the uterus and a small gestational sac. We would not be able to see the actual fetal pole or heartbeat that early. A scan at 7-8 weeks would be best to document a good, viable pregnancy with a heartbeat. ...Read more

Last Period: In general you due date is based on your period. So is your dating in pregnancy. Unless there is a problem dating your pregnancy, the ultrasound does not change that.
