When your due date arrives, you will be more than ready to have your baby! Most women deliver the baby somewhere between 37 and 42 weeks. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, only 5% of babies arrive on the exact due date. Approximately 7% of babies are not delivered by 42 weeks, and when that happens, it is referred to ...Read more
Constipation common: Many women get constipated when they are pregnant. Drinking lots of water and eating plenty of fiber containing foods can help. Many women need a stool softener or a fiber supplement. Constipation does not hurt the baby. If you are not sure if you are cramping from constipation or in preterm labor, call your doctor. ...Read more
4wks pregnant and have bad constipation only at night. Can I take activia greek yogurt and is it ok to eat more that once a day?
I am having bad constipation and pregnant too. Taking fibre rich diet, plenty of water, excercise but not working. Please suggest what should I do?
Not for baby: Constipation in pregnancy isn't bad for baby, though sometimes it can be a sign of dehydration or not drinking enough water. Increased risk of hemorroids is not fun. Drink as much as you can and if still constipated, consider MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) or generic equivalent as very safe in pregnancy and super effective. ...Read more
Am 13weeks pregnant&have bad constipation. Is pushing hard when in the bathroom could hurt the baby or cause a misscarriage?
Constipation: This is a common scenario and is unlikely to be any trouble for the baby. I am sure your prenatal guide book that you have to read during your pregnancy talks about this; and how to have normal or regular bowel movements. It is safe to soften your stool with fluids, fiber and fruits. ...Read more
Is it safe to take 600mg of magnesium while pregnant? Have bad constipation and this always helped before. Nothing else is helping.
8 weeks pregnant had really bad constipation last night and today my stomach feels really sore and strained from pushing does this harm the baby?
Follow up with ob
During pregnancy there is constipation from hormones, iron-which you need, and the fetus. Good bowel habits include fluids, and fiber in brown rice, oats, barley, lentils, beans, strawberries, raspberries, avocados. Products like psyllium, bran are ok but discuss use of any product with OB.
Try to avoid straining, a single episode is unlikely to be harmful, f/u with OB ...Read more

I'm 6 weeks pregnant & have bad constipation&am very bloated. Its bad. I have docusate sodium 100mg & was wondering if it was safe to take 6 instead of 1-3?
Follow the label: For now, follow the label on the docusate. Next, go see your OB doctor and ask what to do - it's going to be a long 9.5 months! Make sure you are eating very healthy foods - avoid fast food, processed foods (like cheetos, frozen dinners, etc.). Eat lots of fresh veggies. Don't drink pop or fruit juice (stick to water and milk). Avoid rice and applesauce (both will constipate). Add prunes! ...Read more

Minor herniated L5/S1 & a rectocele causing constipation. Miralax helps but BAD back pain b4 bowel movements, pain can last days. Don't kno who to see. Want to get pregnant, afraid my back couldn't take it. Time to bite bullet, get rectocele surgery?
I will be twelve weeks pregnant monday, here lately I have been so constipated and straining so much, is this bad?
Possibly: Straining from constipation is generally not a good idea to maintain as a usual thing, pregnant or not. I would advise increasing fiber and water intake; if this isn't sufficient, you should discuss with your ob/gyn. If your multivitamin has iron, you may be able to go to one with less iron, depending on how your blood counts look. Also, he/she may be able to recommend a safe stool softener. ...Read more
I'm 8 weeks pregnant, im severely constipated, vomiting really bad, then im having heartburn. Also, I'm very moody and so exhausted, is this normal?
If I'm waiting to see if I'm pregnant, the two week wait, im bloated and constipated badly, if I took a laxative, would that stop implantation?
No, but...: No it won't, but if the laxative causes severe diarrhea, the dehydration could interrupt the process of implantation. The uterus with a developing pregnancy needs a "quiet" room to conduct its' business, and that is very hard when there is an intestinal "party going on next door". ...Read more
Very constipated and pregnant. Is milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) bad for you if you take it very day? Can it harm the baby in any way?
Yes and no: Milk of magnesia isn't my first choice for constipation in pregnancy. I used it a couple of times, but excess use can cause harm to you and baby. Better is MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) or generic equivalent in pregnancy. It's not absorbed by body and isn't as harsh as milk of magnesia can be. Make sure to drink enough water (make your pee clear colored). Milk of magnesia a couple of times won't harm you or baby t. ...Read more
My mother is 4 months pregnant and she has a bad headache, tired, and constipated (maybe her pills for pregnancy) what can she take?
Lots of remedies: You can't cure fatigue, but there are things she can take. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is fine for headaches. For constipation there are lots of options...Increase fiber and water, and try a stool softener like colace. If her symptoms don't improve, she should talk to her doc. ...Read more
Is holding your breath while pregnant bad for the baby? I've been straining to poop because I'm constipated, and noticed I hold my breath. Is this bad
Unlikely: If you hold your breath too long, you'll pass out. Once unconscious, your body automatically starts breathing again. (that's why we pediatricians are never excited by breath holding spells in toddlers.) if you're not passing out while having a bowel movement, it's unlikely that your baby is suffering any ill effects. Talk to your OB about the constipation-no need to suffer. ...Read more

I'm pregnant and very constipated. Stool softeners and prune juice ain't doing the trick. Can this be bad and are enemas safe?! what else can I do?
Safe laxatives: There are many safe laxatives to try if necessary. Are you drinking enough water daily? Are you eating high fiber foods? Talk to your doctor about whether she has a preference for dulcolax, miralax, (polyethylene glycol) or a different product. Both are safe in pregnancy. ...Read more
