5th metatarsal surg. On 7/26 (resection). Doc. Now says wait 1 yr to do heads2, 3, 4. Necessary? Will cost me 6000 if I wait. 5th feels all healed!

Depends: Without seeing your feet and reviewing your whole history, giving a helpful answer is difficult. My usual approach for follow on procedures is to wait until the patient is healed and comfortable enough to deal with the procedure. If you feel you are at that point, it is difficult to say why your doctor wants to wait. I'd ask him to explain why he wants to wait, considering the extra cost involved. ...Read more

I have a non- healing (3.5 months)displaced avulsion fx of 5th metatarsal. Ortho says prob won't heal - live with it???

Varies: Fractures in that area are often considered "avulsion" fractures. The foot is injured in a twisting injury and the ligament that inserts into the base of the metatarsal pulls a piece of bone off in the injury. It is not terribly uncommon for those fractures to be displaced and not to heal. If it is not causing symptoms can be "lived with". If it is, surgery can be done to fix. ...Read more
