While some don't need much at all! . if you want to "fix" one you need either stainless steel pins called K-wires or similar or screws or plates with screws. Yes: Metacarpal fractures can cause a lot of swelling depending on how they were broken. Proper splinting of the hand in the "safe or functional position" is important to minimize later stiffness. Once fractures have healed enough (usually around 3 weeks) hand therapy can be started to decrease swelling and improve range of motion and stiffness.
