5 Year Old Not Potty Trained
My 3.5 year old son is potty trained, but doesn't want to pee standing up. Is it important that he learns how to do this?
In time he'll change: In early childhood kids often want to do what they did yesterday rather than trying something new. Change can generate anxiety & its hard for adults to understand why it would. In time, dad can model the behavior or his friends at daycare will provide the peer pressure needed for him to change. Give it time and be comforting, he needs you to be an anchor even when he seems to hold back. ...Read more
5 year old still not potty trained. Refuses to poop on the potty and pees in his room. Has devolopmental delay, but could it be something more?
Potty training: Is often part of global delay. It is easier to wait until he is ready and use pull ups to make it easier for you. Regular bathroom trips after breakfast and dinner will attempt to establish a pattern that over time should work. If he is constipated treat that so it is easy for him to pass stool. All the best, it will happen. ...Read more
Why is my almost 5 year old still peeing his pants during the day? My son was potty trained a little after he turned two and a half. He did great for a whole year, but then we went on vacation for about a month and ever since then he's been wetting himsel
Any : Any time a child has had a long period of successfully staying dry and then starting to wet again, it is worth looking into a little farther. Many five-year-olds (especially boys) will wet the bed, but the fact that he did not for an entire year and that he wets during the day is a little concerning. It's great that you had him checked for a urinary tract infection (always the first step!). Since he is not improving on his own or with any of the methods you employed, it may be time to seek the advice of a pediatric urologist. They may be able to do a more in-depth exam and shed more light on the subject. Good luck! ...Read more
My 5 yr old son has been potty trained for years but has wet the bed 4 times this week. What is going on?
Probably normal: Many children, up yo age 5 or 6 years "relepse" and have a few wet nights. Your son may have started to drink a lot beforegoing to bed. May be excessively tired and thus not have the sensation of a full bladder. Certainly have his urine checked in case of infection, however his urine would likely have a strong odor if infected. Utis in 5-y-o boys is quite rare. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My 5 yr old son has been potty trained for years but has wet the bed 4 times this week. What could it be?
Normal : Occasional bed wetting can still be normal in a five yr old. Sometimes a change in sleep circumstances can lead to wetting, e.g., high level of exercise leading to increased depth of sleep , ingesting a great deal of fluids (as in a hot summer) before bedtime, drinking caffeinated beverages, nightmares. If the wetting persists, check it out with your pediatrician. ...Read more
Our 2.5 yr old has been wetting his pants. He has been potty trained for 4 mo & has done very well. Life changes back in apr: baby & a move. Advice?
Regression: This is very common in young children in this situation. My advice to parents: Don't shame or lose your cool - it only makes it worse. Encourage hydration and set frequent reminders for your child to go and try to use the potty. Use a positive reinforcement (i.e. star chart - so many starts = reward). Stay positive and be patient ...Read more
My 2.5 yr old supposedly has toddler diarrhea. Because of his issue i can't get him fully potty trained. When does "toddler diarrhea" usually clear up?
Patience: About 25% of kits train at 2 yr, 75% at 3yr and 90 % at 4.If your kids not ready the diarrhea issue will not matter. Try to let the kid rehearse, provide easy access to the equipment and let him know you will help when he feels the need. It will happen when and if he decided it's time. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My 5 yo son has been potty trained for 2 yrs. Since I started potty training my 3yo son, the 5 yo has started having BM and pee accidents. Attention?
Sounds like it: Sounds like an attention grabber, since mom is spending time with the 2 yo, and all the attention is on potty training, etc. Try and have an activity with the 5yo and when training the 2 you say things like your smarter older brother learned this already and maybe he can show you how to do it, etc. get him involved and praise him for his efforts. Good luck! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Wat cause 5 yo girl to be completely potty trained to regress to wet bed evry night & sometimes wet day.Get's uti's a lot 2. Did 4mos antibiotics & no ?
Evaluation?: When a little one is potty trained, an occasional accident is not a major concern. But a change like you describe makes me wonder if she has an infection. I would want to check for this. If your daughter hasn't had an ultrasound of her kidneys, ureters and bladder, this would be a reasonable - and non-invasive -next step. A consult with a urologist would also be reasonable. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
My 3.5 yo son is potty trained for pee (has been for 6+ months) but absolutely refuses to poop in the potty. He is not constipated. What can we do?
Be Patient!: Trying anything but subtle encouragement will likely cause the opposite effect! at his age i would guess that only 1/2 of all boys are fully trained. Leave the potty available to him, offer privacy, and recognize his cues for a pending bm to suggest a sit on the potty. You might consider a star chart (star on the chart for each movement he does on the potty, but avoid treats as rewards. ...Read more
